Why do I feel vibration in my head when I try to sleep?

How can I get a good night's sleep?

  • The question's at the end, if anybody can't be bothered reading my drivel :) Thanks in advance for all of your advices! At the end of the day, when I'm tired and in bed, about to sleep, I get all scared in the dark and the silence (I'm 22 and live alone in an apartment near my uni) and I can't get a grip on myself and calm down. Yes it's quite embarrassing. All the scary stuff from movies flash up in my head, no matter how much I try reason with myself, in the end I have to turn on my TV with a funny dvd or some nice animation like kungfu panda, at which point I immediately fall asleep in the first 5 minutes of the movie. However, I wake up when it ends, or if I line up 8 hours of cartoons, then I wake up in the morning feeling really really unrefreshed. My friend told me about the sleep timer on the TV, so it switches off but that doesn't work because I wake up when the TV switches off and I get scared and can't fall asleep again. I used to love the peacefulness of the night at the end of the day, just relax and fall asleep, but ever since I started to live alone, which was 3 years ago, I can't settle myself for a TV-free sleep, so I feel like I haven't had a proper night's sleep for the past three years. (I do use an eye-cover when I sleep with the TV on, but still I feel like I don't get a good refreshing sleep) Sometimes when my boyfriend sleeps over, we sleep with the TV and everything off, and his snoring helps me calm down and sleep, but then the bed's too small so it's physically uncomfortable and not a good sleep in the end. And him sleeping over all the time isn't an option because I don't like having him around all the bloody time anyway. And also I don't have the money to buy a bigger bed so I hope nobody suggests either of these options. I'm a person who can't sleep with the light on, I'm only using the TV for the movie noises and I wear an eye cover. But then the movie noises and stuff make me unable to get a good sleep. So my question is, can anyone give me some advice, on how to sleep in the quiet and the dark, without being scared? What's wrong with me, when I used to sleep so well? What sort of things can I try, any (non-stupid) advice is appreciated. Thank you :)

omg this is so weird i had the SAME EXACT situation. heres what i did to help darkness and dimmed lighting help produce melatonin in the brain (a naturally occurring chemical that makes you sleepy and relaxed). by taking melatonin pills a few hours before bed, it helped me ease into a more natural sleep. another simple thing you can do is play music while you sleep. make a playlist that only has about an hour's worth of songs so it will turn off once you fall asleep. another thing you can do that helps me a lot is guided imagery meditation before you sleep. http://www.innerhealthstudio.com/guided-imagery-scripts.html < theres a good many examples of guided imagery exercises but the best thing i find to go to sleep is to watch (or listen with my eyes closed) childrens bedtime stories on youtube. they keep your mind and thoughts positive so that your dreams will naturally be calmer and deeper. i know it sounds silly, but children get the best sleep so they must be doing something right. so it would be something like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Oy8u8W0_do&feature=related hope this helped and good luck :]

I am right there with you and am 40 years older than you are. In this world today, it is no wonder you rehash everything in your mind. Let's see, you said no to the bigger bed. Would said BF chip in? It would be to his advantage too. Other than that, you did say you didn't want him around all the time... (don't marry him), you could get a dog if your apartment allows buy a noise machine that makes white noise put secure locks on all windows and doors sign up for a security system or, god forbid, get a roommate. I hope something works cause I know I would be at wit's end w/o my husband here. good luck

What you might need is a white noise or background sounds generator. There are devices you can buy in stores for this purpose, or you can try this online version: http://moods.onlineclock.net I can personally recommend the Rain background sound. There is something peaceful about falling asleep with the sound of rain in the background. Try it !

I actually had a problem like that. The quiet always bothered me but now I listen to my iPod with the music turned down kinda low. If the dark is also a problem I suggest a dim light with a timer or a night light. I hope this helped you. :)
