Should I take an IQ test?

  • The reason I ask this question is because i have developed an interest in psychology and i read something about how peoples IQ impacts their lives. Now a friend of mine of whom I always knew was smart, recently took an official IQ test and scored very highly indeed. She said I should do the same. I was very much up for taking the test, but then it dawned on me, do i really want to know. I have never been very clever and it would be so embarrassing if I were to have a low test score of say 90 or maybe even lower it would depress me. Plus I would have to admit this to family and friends. It seems to take me longer to take things in and memorize what I have seen or read. Although I may seem outwardly somewhat intelligent to people, i believe this to be down to my interest in learning new things and not a natural ability. It sounds dramatic, but i do have a distinct fear of taking the test. Is it understandable for me to be this worried over an IQ test ?

    I took an IQ test last year and I was just as nervous as you. Best thing is just to take it anyways despite your nerves, its actually a really easy test! most of it is like...common sense. I felt like I tanked it when I took it but I ended up with a score around 120?124? (I forget exactly what it was sorry) but really its not a difficult test, you'll be laughing at yourself for freaking out over it like I did once you get the results back!

IQ tests don't measure intelligence. IQ tests are only capable of measuring ones ability to take IQ tests.

Hmm an average person scores 100. I think you are well educated thus i think you will score higher than that! Don't worry it is not even that tough!

there is a knack to taking them you can mug up on the kinds of questions you get - look at sample questionnaires but it doesn't really matter what the score is because we can increase our I.Q I always do really badly on the spatial intelligence papers and I am an artist so it isnt really a measure of much that is practical in your life. I dont really see why you would have to tell anyone else - its only your business .

I never claimed to be the most sophisticated person because I am not. I have I am sure an average IQ which means 100 and which is what the average of people get. Sometimes IQ tests get overrated. I am not saying that because I know I would never score above 100 unless it was on a ''tickle me'' test but that is just a fun IQ test and does not count. If you want to know your real IQ you would have to go to one of those places like Mensa where they test your IQ and my husband did it there. If you are more logical minded and are good at figuring things out that might be an advantage but my husband scored 144 IQ at Mensa IQ test years ago and he said that most people would have managed to answer the question ..the difficult part about the test was the short amount they were given for each single question and I would not be good at being put under such time pressure to solve a question...I have a more creative mind...I am better at languages and such things. I am not good at mathemathical things and I would do poorly under that time pressure which he said was really short..it shocked even those who did well and 144 is a good score and my husband is good at anything technical. he is an expert with computers but when it comes to general knowledge or art or languages he is just average...so an IQ test does not show you how good your general knowlege is..and it should cover everything in my opinion...my husband is British and English is my second language but when I ask him sometimes for a fairly simple word, he says he doesn't know the meaning..so highly technically competent and mathematically but no real general knowlege at all. x
