Becoming a Nurse Practitioner?

Information on becoming a psychiatric nurse practitioner?

  • At the moment I am attending Molloy College in New York, I am in a four year program to obtain my RN degree. I would like to eventually become a psychiatric nurse practitioner but would like some guidance on how to successfully achieve this. I'll list some questions below 1)Should I minor in psychology at my school next semester? 2)After I obtain my degree & pass the nclex am I able to go straight into the psychiatric nurse practitioner program or must I do some other schooling before? Any other advice would be appreciated.

  • Answer:

You need to get at least 2-3 years of nursing experience before you can apply to any NP program. If you are majoring in nursing you would not have time to fit in a minor likely unless you want to delay graduating.DNP is a PhD program which is the step above a Masters.I think it adds 2 years.
