A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of mental illness. In addition to med school (after an undergraduate degree) psychiatrists must receive additional training and serve a supervised residency in their specialty.

A psychiatrist is an M.D. physician. You would have to go to medical school and do a residency in psychiatry. Psychologists,who aren't physicians, can treat patients with a master's degree (but it's better to have a Ph.D.)
