How are service and leadership interrelated?

Is there a way for service learning to be unimportant towards self-leadership?

• My psychology professor assigned as an extra-credit project, to discuss why service learning "is not" important to self-leadership. I am here to ask for the Yahoo! Answer's community's opinions, because I feel like service learning IS a very important part of self-leadership. I'm trying to avoid having to write up a five-page paper on how in the end, it is important and necessary, as I would basically not be completing the requirements of the assignment for not answering her question.
