What is logic? How best can I learn about it?
-
Exactly what is logic? I don't just want simple, 1-word, or vague answers like: reason, sense, or common sense. I want to know exactly ALL that logic is, what it encompasses, what its rules are, what are the principles and techniques behind it. I also want to learn it all, so if you know of any good books (preferably), or websites, please tell me. To explain what I mean, today while watching a "Diagnosis Murder" repeat, the hero - Dr. Mark Sloane was explaining how he solved the crime, when the murderer said "I don't understand." A medical student then piped up, "It's a [technical term?] inconsistency. It proves you were in the room." Sorry I forget what sort of "inconsistency" he said. Also, in Mathematics they speak of Deductive Reasoning, and Inductive Reasoning; and I've heard terms like: a priori, a posteriori, and post hoc logical fallacy. 3 other examples of what I'm getting at are: 1. Mathematics is made up of different fields such as: Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus, and Algebra; and is about the study of numbers in nature and the man-made world, the how & why of their occurence, and how we can make use of them. 2. Physics consists of the likes of: Mechanics, Waves & Vibrations, Optics, Electromagnetism, Relativity and Quantum Physics; and is about studying the natural and man-made world to find out what it all is, what it's all made of, and how things work or happen, and again how we can make use of this. 3. English: Interpretation, Comprehension, Literature, Essay writing; and is about understanding the English language and making better use of it. So what is Logic made up of? What are it's component fields, principles, and rules, etc.? I'm guessing the most likely among you to know what be Mathematicians, Electronics / Computers people, and Medical people.

Answer:
Logic is a very broad topic that includes rhetoric, fallacies, and many other tools. A good place to start is to examine things that can be explained or dismissed by logic. Start here: http://changingminds.org/index.htm. It should keep you busy for a few years :)
