What are points on yahoo?what do they do?

What is the psychology of users who've reached the 6 "points" level, but seldom if Ever ask questions??? ?

  • This floors me for a number of reasons. 1) - what else are they doing with their lives? 2) - what is the "practical" gain to acquire so many points, when there is nothing but just getting the points that are gained? Meaning; if at least they got a quarter for every ten points made I'd say..'well, when you reach 550,000 points you'd have..ah'..can't do the math, but AT LEAST it comes to more than nothing! 3) -What would motivate anyone's mind into such meaningless, as far as tangible gain is concerned, because there is none, into such competitive madness? And yet there is competitiveness of some kind, evident. 4) -Is this evidence THAT something truly of substance is REALLY lacking in their lives? 5) - And Lastly : Why do some of these people ask such few question? What gain are they after? Is it an obsession of a kind? A crazy state of mind, let's say :obsessive-compulsive...or whatever else??? I know, for I've been told that there's a particular fellow who has half a million points earned - but that seriously makes me wonder: What could they POSSIBLY have the time in which to do anything else??? So I wonder... Any clues to this phenomenon? Thanks.

I'm not to level seven yet but I almost fit you scenario at L6. I seldom ask. I think I hav asked 4 questions, because I needed help with a couple and one was a joke that no one caught. I have a philosophy that I was put on Earth to help those that are in need of a simple answer. I have a limited formal education but am well studied in several subjects. I am disabled and can just get around a little but can't do as I wish so for entertainment I started answering questions. I spend my time reading questions , when one strikes me that I have no idea about, I research it and form an answer. This not only helps the poser but expands my knowledge. I hope this answers your question because that's all I can tell you. Others will have other reasons, and these are mine. Now if I run upon something that I cannot find an answer to, I will ask!

I think its just a boredom thing, or a desire to be philanthropic. They may just not have many questions, but feel as though they know a lot, or are very opinionated and want to talk about what they think. The same thing could be said for bloggers, they spend hours and hours on something that has no benefit, well it's similar to yahoo answers, only answers helps people sometimes. It's stupid to think they have some kind of psychological disorder, its just boredom or a desire to write about their lives, like how people keep journals, diaries, or blogs.

I do it because I enjoy the site and it's a more constructive thing to do with my free time than watching TV. I am not here for points or "tangible gain", as you put it ... nor am I competitive (it took me over a year to reach Level 7) ... nor am I obsessed, suffering from any sort of mental illness, or in any way crazy or mad. The reason I ask comparatively few questions is that I only ask questions that I need answers to. I don't ask random questions simply for the sake of doing so, as LOTS of Y!A users clearly do. I'm kinda not liking your assumptions about me and others like me. You don't actually know what goes on in my life (I get plenty of things done every day) and I don't understand why you feel the need to concern yourself with my "psychology." Mine is just fine.

Okay I'm on Level 6 and I don't ask many questions. 1. I don't come on here much, because I'm busy and stuff. (Just normal stuff). Right now I'm on Christmas vacation. 2. No point to points. I've been on here more than a year and they just add up over time. Mine probably works out to like 3 points a day or something. 3. I'm not in any competition. 4. I think nearly everyone has something lacking in their lives. 5. Whenever I ask a question, I get very few answers, and generally low-quality/non-helpful. Sometimes abusive as well. This has discouraged me from asking more questions. I can easily think of questions, but when I start to ask I think, "Oh why bother?"

Funny this question comes from a "level 6 user" who has asked only 200 questions opposed to answering 3,000+ questions. But, who am I to judge? Wish I knew the answer to your question.

Coming on Y/A to answer questions is therapeutic for me. I have lived a damn hard life, and have learned many lessons throughout it. If I can help someone with advice that I learned the hard way, then I will--and it makes me happy to do it. It doesn't take a genius to answer questions on here--most of the information is basic knowledge and common sense. I have asked very few questions, because I bother to look up any information I might need either on the net, or in the Answers Resolved Questions areas. Many people ask questions on here because they're either too lazy to look up the info for themselves, or they don't know how. Sometimes I just come here to read everyone's answers...some people on here have a great sense of humor, and their answers are funny, provocative, and creative. Points don't matter. I hope I have answered your question sufficiently.

Know it alls, who know that this isn't the best place to get good info. They like helping, sometimes joshing, but never take info here as good advice? Therefore, they don't ask for that which they don't trust?

All I know is, you've asked a very interesting question here. Sometimes I pause and wonder about the people behind the key-boards. Personally I admire competitive drive. The only ones who confuse me are the ones who answer a thousand questions and reveal nothing about themselves. That's understandable in the plumbing category but in politics or news? Then there's the other extreme..people who reveal "everything" to the point where it's embarrassing to read. I like your style and will be adding you as a contact. We may not agree on all things but I have a feeling you'll be fun to watch. Btw, I'm a big sci-fi fan and Kubrick's 2001 S.O. is in my top 5..also the original Blade Runner..The Shining..John Carpenter's, The Thing..and an off-beat film, Mars Attacks....see ya on the playground. Edit: I ask Q because I'm well aware that I don't know everything and all sources are slanted in one way or another. I try to hear from many and then sort it out myself. The folks here on YA are just as good a source as any and better than most of the biased media we have today. There are many people here who have real life experience which is far better than some book-worm spouting opinions on things they haven't got a clue about.

Loneliness in their lives? A desire to reach out and help others? Maybe both?

i don't have a whole lot of points but it has taken me a while to get them. 2 years. sometimes i go to ask a question only to find that someone else has already asked a similar question. so it's a moot point to ask it again. i like to get on here in the evening when i'm winding down and sometimes during lunch if i have a few extra minutes. hope that helped a bit. at least from one almost level 6 user.
