What are some computer jobs that can never be outsourced?

What will happen to America after most jobs are outsourced?

  • We know that once jobs are outsourced the probability of them coming back is quite dismal. Tech support is being outsourced, industry is being outsourced and even some healthcare is being outsourced. I graduate college in two years (Computer Science) and I'm TERRIFIED that by the time I graduate there will be nothing left. Is America's middle class going the way of the dinosaurs? What will happen?

  • Answer:

What you should perhaps theorize about is: What is the next step in economic progress or has the US reached the ceiling of growth? Outsourcing is simply a transfer of trade, therefore, we must come up with more products to trade. This does require more and more investment and research and development. No one in the entire world is at the level of the US as far as how far along the economic trail we have come, no one has as solid a foundation either, but to continue to grow will require just as it did in the industrial revolution: innovation. If people stopped playing their lives away, innovation would become second hand again and US growth would continue. In order to walk requires energy; to run, a little more, but to compete with the world requires a skill some can not seem to find: the sacrifice of play time.

Well, what happened when all the farming jobs were outsourced to tractors and fertilizer? What happened when the buggy whip factories shut down? Dude, unless you're an idiot you shouldn't have too much trouble finding a job as a computer science graduate. As some jobs get outsourced two things happen: people move into jobs that cannot be outsourced because they require a local human presence ... and that already describes perhaps most of the jobs in the economy already. And, new jobs emerge in response to new technologies and in order to tap into the available labor supply. There would never be a time that most workers are unemployed. People actually are a valuable and supremely flexible revenue-generating resource. Businesses, entrepreneurs, and managers will use that resource because they want to make money. You are aware (right?) that there was no such thing as a computer science major a few decades ago, and there was no such thing as a computer at all just 70 years ago? Ponder that.

Outsourcing has the reason that our product is not competitive. If we try to protect domestic industry by using quota or tariff, our partner countries will do the same thing to our export products. So, you are right that America has lost its comparative advantage in manufacturing sector. But our competitiveness is very high in services sector. That needs a relocation of our work forces by reeducation. It may take time because it is structural. I do hope that you will have time until then to reeducate yourself. Only that way you won't become a dinosaur in our society. Don't forget to learn Chinese.

America will represent Mexico in about 10 years. This is the legacy of supply side economics (Friedman economics).

You do understand that there are more jobs outsourced TO the US from abroad than outsourced FROM the US to foreign countries, don't you?

Up until WWII when more could be produce with less labor input, jobs disappeared but people worked fewer hours, so there were still jobs for everyone who wanted to work, or least there was except during recessions, Maybe our problem is not that we do not work hard enough, but that we work too much,
