Why is Kenya considered a less economically developed country?

If you have ever been there then you will understand. The poverty is unbelievable. The children cry out for paper and pencils - our kids cry out for £20 a week bleeding pocket money! Says it all eh

per capita GDP is the indicator that everybody uses. B/c you can't quite have a stable modern economy w/o getting your GDP up.

The entire Continent of Africa is poor in general. Many societies still exist on a traditional economic level, meaning they grow food to eat and even then that may not be enough for much of the population. Most of the land use there is for subsistence farming. Corrupt governments that rely on foreign companies to exploit their natural resources. In fact much of Africa, Kenya included, just gained their independence from European colonial powers in the last 60 years.

compared to its population the resources are quite meager moreover the later`s utilisation needs a lot of optimization..

Inappropriate agricultural policies, inadequate credit, and poor international terms of trade contributed to the decline in agriculture. Kenya's inward-looking policy of import substitution and rising oil prices made Kenya's manufacturing sector uncompetitive. The government began a massive intrusion in the private sector. Lack of export incentives, tight import controls, and foreign exchange controls made the domestic environment for investment even less attractive.
