Does the prison population impact the unemployment rate?
-
I was just wondering if when people are in jail if they count as unemployed. I was reading about unemployment rates by race and black unemployment rates were much higher, and I was wondering if that had anything to do with a larger percent in prison or some other factor.

Answer:
No.. when the unemployment rate is calculated, they look only at the population actively seeking work. This doesn't include young kids, elderly, prisoners, stay at home moms, etc. The reason some minorities may have higher unemployment is lack of skill and education. Those jobs are easily filled and easily replace people or lay off people when need be.

Reasonably thinking, I would say that since you are in prison, you can not be gainfully employed. And since this person remains on the census, the result is an unemployed individual. My answer is yes.

No the unemployment rate is measured only by those that try to claim unemployment benefits or seek government assistance. As a previous poster mentioned this excluded some populations but it also fails to measure some that have been unemployed for very long periods yet seek work.

No. The unemployment rate is a factor of people looking for jobs that don't have one vs. the total people who have jobs that aren't looking for one. People in jail aren't looking for jobs so they don't count in the calculation.

well i think they make them do some work but thats not considered employed, but they shouldn't count them anyways, because either way they don't have the choice to be employed or not

*sigh* Joe S... Actually, I'm just a little kid and have no idea, but I think that the people in jail are unemployed, but it's really their fault for being a criminal. I think it does affect the race by quite a bit. I don't know.

I don't think so they have inside jobs with very little pay and from the people I know in there they don't get unemployment unless there on work release then I'm not for sure
