Besides becoming an economist. What job does someone with a master's in economics get?
-
I am about to get my bachelor's in economics. I want to go to grad school and get my masters in applied economics, but i can't really find any sites that show the jobs you can get with a master's in economics.

Answer:
Many jobs are available for economists in the public sector, especially in the areas of statistical analysis (Statistics Canada is always looking for economists), monetary policy (the Bank of Canada), public finance (advising municipal, provincial and federal governments on taxing and spending), economic development (advising towns and provinces on the best ways to attract business investment or plan for future expansion), and policy analysis (the very best students have a good shot at prestigious and rewarding jobs with institutions like the IMF, the World Bank and the United Nations). In the private sector, there are plenty more possibilities. Students with a training in economics can also find work as foreign-exchange traders, stockbrokers, financial consultants, auditors, tax analysts, investment advisors, research officers, bank managers, market analysts, labour-relations managers, journalists, and so on. And economics degrees open the door to professional programs in Business Administration, Law, Public Administration and Accountancy.

Virtually anything. You can apply for managerial positions in the bank, the stock market, unit trusts, investment...or lecture in universities. Write a book, do research. Be a partner in a company.

I am afraid that a master's degree in economics is not a very marketable degree. To be taken seriously as an economist at least in the US, you need a PhD. Some of the better schools don't even offer a masters degree. It is sometimes given out as a consolation prize for someone who is not good enough to earn a Ph.D. and has to leave the program.. If you want to go into business, then a masters degree in finance or a masters of business administration (MBA) are more marketable. If you are strong in math, a masters in quantitative finance is one of the best degrees. My son who majored in math as an undergraduate, went on to get a masters in quantitative finance. His annual bonus is now larger than what I ever earned as a salary.

If you do something directly related to your degree, you'll probably have "analyst" in your job title somewhere.

I have a master in economics and to me it has always been very useful. It gives you tools that you use in many areas, because you get good analytical skills and a critical spirit. People with good math skills look at problems in a different way. And most management majors focus more on practical courses than on math courses. There's nothing wrong about it, a management major is very useful, but i think that the practical part you can get on-the-job, and the analytical skills and the problem-solving skills it's either you have them or you don't. I have friends who also have masters in economics who work in banking, marketing, strategy, operations, consulting, etc I believe the market responds more to the university where you graduate than to the major itself. Good luck

You can work with a bank, some firms do require that you have a degree in social sciences and do not really mind which. of course a masters will be an added advantage. Further, you can work with a consultancy firm or pursue a career as a lecturer. best of all, you can become self employed. Governments all over the world are encouraging self emmployment.

A masters in economics is a worthless degree, don't bother getting one unless you want to continue on to a PhD. This comes from someone with a masters currently working on a PhD in economics. Consider a masters in public policy or finance since they are much more useful.

I'm a finance and banking major and it's almost the same major as economics. pretty much you can get similar or the same jobs that are offered with either finance or economics. so you could go into brokerage and help in investing or financial advising etc. Also if you wish too, I know alot of colleges and universities sometimes only require a masters to teach at their schools for that area if you're interested in teaching economics once you get your masters.

depending on whether or not you would be willing to specialise more deeply. clearly there is teh academic aspect, you could go into research or become a lecturer or a published author in economics. there is also the journalism potential where you could write for business columns of magazines or do the business sections of news channels. also there is the more financial aspect, fore example you could do auditing or business consulting, accounting etc. if you would however be willing to get extra specialisation you could do anything from be a lawyer to go for management positions in companies to even software design for economics. the possibilities are really endless. so you could try going to the careers center in your university if none of the above options are really what you are looking for.
