What have more copper Pre-1982 Copper Pennies or Nickels?
-
Nickels-75% Copper Penny-95% Copper However nickels are bigger so what one has more copper in it all together?
-
Answer:
Pre 1982 pennies weighed 3.1-3.2 grams. The percentage metal is not by volume, but by weight. Thus, .95 x 3.1 (and 3.2) is 2.945 - 3.04 grams of copper. Nickels are 4.9 to 5.2 grams. x .75 is 3.675 - 3.9 grams of copper. The other 25% is nickel (though not sure if that has value to you) Weight range depends mostly on the wear on the coin.
