What are good colleges/universities for archaeology?

Where can I study CLASSICAL archaeology in California?

  • What is the best route to a job in classical archaeology - a PhD in classics? calssical archaeology? Are there jobs available in the US after obtaining a PhD - universities, museums, etc.? and finally is it possible to have a family and work in classical archaeology - would I have time to have a spouse and children? I know I've asked a lot of questions, so thank you for your time, and please don't leave any comments about dinosaurs, that's paleontology, not archaeology. Please only answer if you know. Thank you.

  • Answer:

Claremont Colleges in Southern California used to have a classical program. UCLA I am sure has one and probably UC Berkley. University of Chicago may have one also. I am an Anthopologist/Archaelogist, and I can tell you that unless you plan on teaching or working for a museum there are not a lot of job opportunities for a classical archeologist in the United States. Of course, there are private foundations which often sponsor classical 'expeditions' or 'digs' in Europe-Mediterranean and the Middle/Near East. The Smithsonian and National Geographic also, from time to time sponsor classical expeditions and or excavations. Good luck in your chosen career path. Classical archaeologists do have an association in the U.S. for both professionals and amatuers. Perhaps you can go to their web site and also get answers to some of your questions.
