Can I take courses outside of my current major?

Is pre-med a major? if not what courses can u take in college that will guarantee u go to med school?

  • the university(adelphi in NY) i want to go to does not offer pre-med as a major.

  • Answer:

You're getting some good information here, and some bad. Pre-med is not usually a major. It's a series of courses intended to prepare you for the MCAT test and for medical school. You can major in whatever you'd like, as long as you make sure to take these classes. As mentioned in another one of your questions, at Adelphi, they will work with you to make sure you take the correct classes. (It's not usually a matter of taking whatever science classes you'd like--there is a core group of specific classes that will help you prepare.) There is no guaranteed path to medical school, with about 50% of all applicants gaining acceptance each year. Before settling on Adelphi, ask them what percentage of THEIR pre-med students actually go on to medical school. Good luck.

One of those odd facts that pre-med students are obsessed with is that more medical students have undergraduate degrees in classics than in biology. I on the other hand only obsess on this when I'm in the ER.

Pre-med is a major in some colleges/universities. If there is no pre-med, i would go for a double major in chemistry and biology.

There are no courses you can take that will guarantee your admittance to medical school. The best thing you could do is talk with your advisor about which courses to take. I've known several people who got into med school with a BS in Psychology. Others did quite well with a BS in Biology. The key is to make sure you take all the required prerequisite classes for medical school. Check the website of the medical school you're interested in attending, and there should be a list of the prerequisite classes needed.

pre-med is just a term to address majors that could be a good background for med school. for ie, bs biology, bs psychology, bs human biology... mostly sciences. it also depends on the med school you want to enroll in. some doesnt require a BS degree. some would accept even if you are a AB degree holder provided you pass the minimum grade requirement for a national medical entrance exam. im not so sure how it goes there but in some countries, particularly the philippines, you have to take the NMAT exam for you to enroll your self to a certain med school. and i think each med school has their own minimum grade requirement

As much science and math as you can handle.
