Before I watch Rise of Planet of Apes, what should I watch?

Before I watch Rise of The Planet Of The Apes, what should I watch? Should I just watch the one "Planet of the Apes" or should I watch the entire 5-movie series of Planet of The Apes? ( Planet of the Apes 1968, * Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970) * Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971) * Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972) * Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973)) I want to watch the important stuff, before watching the movie that comes out tomorrow. Also should I watch the 2001 remake of planet of the apes, directed by Tim Burton? Basically I'm asking for you opinion on these movies if you seen them.

"Rise" can be enjoyed in itself without wathcing any of the others. But if you're curious, the 5 movies from the 60s & 70s relate to "Rise," but the 2001 version not as much. (There are references--some subtle, some not, to the first 5 movies sprinkled throughout "Rise"). I grew up watching those movies as a kid and loved them (still do!). The first "Planet" is a classic and is definitely worth watching. The second ("Beneath") is a bit on the tedious side, but kind of interesting in the context of the Cold War during which it was filmed (and the fears of nuclear war, which are a central theme of this movie). "Escape" is great fun. "Conquest" may be interesting for you to see AFTER you see "Rise"--"Rise" is in some ways a newer/better version of the same ape-character's story as leader of the apes vs. humans that is featured (differently) in "Conquest." "Battle" is not so great, but it does bring the story full circle, if you find yourself getting hooked on them, I'd watch all 5, but you really can enjoy the "Rise" movie without all that background. Personally, I think I enjoyed "Rise" more because I'm so familiar with the original movies. Tim Burton's movie is quite a different adaptation on the whole story--more a counterpart to the 1968 "Planet" (and based more directly on the original 1963 novel) than it is relevant to "Rise."

The original movie is all you'll really need to see if you just want to familiarize yourself with the franchise, since it was the best one in the original seires, plus Rise of the Planet of the Apes being a reboot will start a different continuity from the older movies. You won't need to see Tim Burton's remake before watching this one.

The very first one is always the best one of any series. It is a classic just like Cool Hand Luke.
Interviews of James Franco cause he's so hot.

I don't NEED to watch any of them. Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a prequel, so no prior information will be required to understand and enjoy the film. If you just want to familiarize yourself with Planet of the Apes so that you have a greater appreciation of "Rise," I'd say that it entirely depends on how into it that you want to get. If you want to go into the new movie as an expert on all things planet of the Apes, then watch all of them, including the 2001 remake. If you want an appreciation of the history of the franchise, just watch the original movie. If you just want a taste for what comes after "Rise," I'd recommend the 2001 remake or the original if you'd prefer (I know that it's not cool to recommend remakes over the original, but I've never cared for "classic" movies that much and the remake wasn't bad). If you are into old movies and you watch the original and really enjoy it, go ahead and watch the rest of the 5 movie series. Really, it's entirely up to how much you decide you like the series.
