Why is Anthropology a good field to study?

How to say I'm interested in Anthropology?

  • I'm going to college next year, and I am really thinking in majoring in anthropology. I am applying to colleges that have good programs, but also have other options just in case anthro doesn't work out.The only thing is that I have not really told anyone about my interest in anthropology because its not "conventional" like biology or pre-med (what all my friends want to do). My question is 1. Is anthropology really a good field to go into, and will it provides good career opportunities? 2. How do I let my parents and teachers/counselor know that this is truly the field of study I'm interested in? Many people feel that anthro is a soft or pseudo-science, so I how can I convince them that it is really viable?

  • Answer:

    1. Anthropology has some super interesting classes covering a broad range of study that could be considered biology, sociology, psychology, or history. The combination of all of these fields under the umbrella of understanding humans in all of their facets makes for a robust learning experience. Sadly, it isn't a professional degree, so your career opportunities are limited to academia. There will, of course, be some career options outside of universities and museums, but those are usually few and far between. If you want to make a decent living wage working a 9-5 job, Anthropology isn't the best choice for your major. 2. There are plenty of legitimate sounding job titles that count as Anthropology, that you could use in explaining why it is a good field of study: Primatologists, Forensic Anthropologists, Archaeologists, Linguists, Ethnographers and Ethnologists are all professions that can be used as positive examples.

You have picked the absolute best major to educate yourself about people and history on the Planet. Let me get up on my soapbox, excuse me.. It should be mandatory in school like math and English. Anthro is needed to know how humans think and behave. Political Science needs Anthro because you need to work with nations and powers. People. Management in a business, know people. International Business? Cultures and people around the world. Teach English in another country? people and different cultures. Particularly when leaving your culture and nation to go elsewhere in the world to work. Gotta know peoples behaviors and cultures or you will not survive. You will also not be hired either without knowing cultures and people. Anthro teaches you about History, Economics, and what keeps nations from killing each other and so forth. That is always a good thing to know for anybody in this globalized place we live in. As for making money? I don't know any longer. I had my major and career chosen but as of last weekend, our gov and the debt crises has taken that away. I have been searching for months on your question and the answer is there, but it takes some work to find it. I came to the conclusion that I need a graduate degree even to get hired to work, but now that is even in question. All I can say is go back in my postings below and see if it helps. I have a lot of links to other Anthro sites that may provide answers also. Best of luck.
