What are good colleges/universities for archaeology?

What is the difference between "art history and archaeology" and "archaeology"?

  • when i am looking at college majors it always "art history and archaeology" is that the same as archaeology? what is the art history for?

  • Answer:

Art History looks at past culture by examining stylistic properties of architecture, statuary, ornamentation, monuments, etc... Modern Egyptology is more along the lines of art history. I'm a North American archaeologist. I strictly follow the scientific method. I don't necessarily care about the big flashy items like art historians do. I use elements of geophysics, geomorphology, and biology to examine cultural land use and settlement patterns. Their is a lot of science involved in what I do, more so than a lot of archaeologists. Generally speaking, however, traditional archaeology is very different from art history, it involves more science. We examine soil patterns and small artifact assemblages instead of large temples and statues. Many times the excavation techniques are similar, but the questions being researched are very different.
