How impractical is a major in anthropology?

Anthropology/Biology Major?

  • I'm planning on a double major in anthropology and biology next year. I want to eventually get a PhD in anthropology and work as a special agent for the FBI in either their counterterrorism or criminal investigation unit. However, my main concern is that people keep saying that anthropology is an impractical field and that I'll be "educated but jobless." Does anyone know what you can really do with a degree in anthropology and whether the FBI would even be interested in someone with a degree in that?

  • Answer:

I don't know about the FBI. I know that the military has been recruiting anthropologists. Although, thats sort of frowned on by a lot of anthropologists. You could go in to medical anthropology. That's what I'm doing. The thing with anthropology is that you have to be very passionate about what you're doing. If you're concerned about making a lot of money then you should look elsewhere. I'm not saying that you can't make money but it's a long hard struggle. Anthropology in a lot ways is a humanitarian career and there isn't a lot of money in helping people.
