Why is genetic diversity important to the survival of a species?

Genetic diversity: the greatest strength and weakness of the human species?

  • It seems like when there's no genetic diversity, things get rapidly boring, but when there's too much genetic diversity, things get tense. It even causes wars. Why is this? Is genetic diversity good or bad? When populations start looking too different... are they almost turning into different species? Why does Nature make species compete against each other? What gives? Is genetic diversity good or bad?

  • Answer:

Wars are caused by delusion. Delusion is the root cause of greed, nationalism, war and hate, among other things. Genetic diversity is just one of the things people delude themselves about. It's ultimately good for the survival of the species because if there is ever an outbreak of disease so virulent that it threatens humanity's survival, a diverse gene base is our best chance of ensuring some people survive.

genetic diversity is good. it's like an insurance against rapid extinction of humanity and in a sense, war is good too. without war the human technology would not have developed the way it is now. it's because humans are constantly being forced to compete, weather its against wild animals, disease, or war that we are constantly forced to develop. (or else we'll be living happily in the garden of eden, naked and being vegan.) btw, genetic diversity =/= war. I'm pretty sure that Europeans fought amongst themselves as much as they fought with arabs. it's when politics and greed come to play that war develops. as for example, when the few settlers came to America, the native helped them survive a brutal cold. but when a whole colony came here trying to conquer it all, hell broke loose. of course, with recent technology even the people with genetics that are detrimental for their health is surviving and reproducing. like people with hemophilia, sickle cell anemia, diabetes and so on. so the natural selection for humankind kind of lessened. If your meaning of genetic diversity is this (the people with bad gene passing their gene to future generation) than yes. this is bad. it's like we're retro-evolving.

I wouldn't use superlatives. It isn't the greatest strength or weakness IMO. It is vital to our survival. I don't really think genetic diversity causes war. You can have war between very similar people or you can have peace with very diverse
