Which is the best university in the world for archeology?

In general in university if i double major can i major in both biological sciences and clasical archeology?

  • so my career choices are between a vet, archeologist and a history professor. My first choice is a vet so i was wondering if i can double major with a science major and an art major, so that when it comes to graduate school i can apply for both vet school and graduate school for archeology so if i can't make it into vet school for some reason i can go into becoming an archeologist without having to go back to undergrad and do a bachelor of arts in classical archeology.

  • Answer:

I am currently completing a BS in Psychology with minors in Anthropology, Sociocultural Anthropology, and Biological Sciences. I am--essentially--two courses and a foreign language shy of a BA in Anthro and about 5 chemistry, 1 physics, and a "science and society" course short of a BS in Biological Sciences. I have also completed over 170 credit hours of coursework. (My school requires 120 for a Bachelors) Can you do it? Probably, Will you do it in four years? Probably not. The reason is that most Archaology and Anthro Bachelors are more akin to an arts degree requiring a second language among other things. Most Biological Sciences degrees have--in addition to the biology component--a pretty sturdy chemistry, math, and physics background. There is little or no overlapping of courses between the degrees and the chemistry lab requirements and language requirements for the two degrees are both long, sequential, and usually rather time intensive. For the BS in Bio Sciences at my school, for example, there are something like 5 chemistry courses (assuming you had high school chemistry, otherwise 6) that must be taken in sequence. There are also at least two series of biology courses that must also be taken in sequence and only after your initial 1 to 3 chemistry courses. My suggestion--if you're serious about biology and archaeology--is to look into bioarchaeology. BioArch is somewhat of a hybrid between archaology and physical anthropology and often includes or is related to forensic anthro. In some schools, mine just started one, it's offered as a BS degree and allows some of your biology coursework to count for major credit. It's more likely to be able to complete a dual BioScience/BS Anthro in a reasonable amount of time as well. Good luck though.
