Who are the Basque people?

Are all Europeans descendant from the "Basque people"?

  • From what I've read online (mostly wikipedia, but I don't really know if I'm reading is true) the Basque people are descendant from early homo sapiens in Europe and that most Europeans (especially Western Europeans) are descendant from these early human tribes in the Iberian peninsula. I thought Europeans descendant from tribes that came from the middle east. That's why we speak Indo Euroean languages but the Basque language is not Indo-European. Or is this because of cultural and linguistic influences rather than genetic influences. So for example trading with Middle eastern farmers brought about these cultural changes.

  • Answer:

From a DNA perspective, some Celts, such as some on the British Isles and parts of Spain, are related, and possibly descended from the Basques. But Celtic was a culture which swept through Europe. It was not a race. Therefore the Celtic people had multiple origins. This explains why people related to and descended from Basques spoke a different language than the Basques. Europe has had many waves of migrations over the course of tens of thousands of years.
