Where to apply for a job in Rome, Italy?

What is the job where people to go to like Egypt or Rome and excavate ruins and translate and find out things?

  • Answer:

It's not a "job" it's an academic profession called Archaeology. You need to study it in college and usually get at least a masters or PhD degree to be able to work on ancient sites. Amateurs can participate in the excavations as volunteers on some projects. You can look at the website: http://www.earthwatch.org It lists several archaelogical projects around the world where you can pay to participate and learn about the process over a few weeks period. Archaeology is a demanding career that does not pay very well -- people do it because they love the subject and are willing to put up with the sacrifices that are required to participate in the studies. There are local amateur archaeological societies in some US cities and in some foreign countries that you might be able to join if you have interest in the area. Your local library is a good place to find books that tell you about the profession too. The magazine "Archaeology" is available every month in most Barnes and Noble bookstores or you can read articles on their website. The magazine "KMT" is specifically about Egyptian archaeology. I'd suggest you buy issues of those to get a better idea of the profession and what is going on in the world as far as excavations these days.

The answer from c_kayak_fun is excellent (as usual!) and I agree with it. As an extra comment - you can find out more background about archaeology by reading the Wikipaedia article (see below). There are many different fields under the general heading of archaeology. Work on Greece and Rome is usually called "Classical Archaeology", to distinguish it from Prehistory and archaeology in other continents. If you enrolled as an undergraduate studying archaeology at university, you might be able to join excavations as a volunteer. Places as volunteers on digs are somewhat competitive, so you'd need to have good marks ... but interest and enthusiasm go a long way :-) My ex-wife is an archaeologist at Sydney Uni; she usually makes 1 or 2 trips to Greece every year with undergraduate volunteers. As c_kayak_fun notes, to work as a full-time professional archaeologist, you would need to complete a PhD. So you're looking at around 7 years of university to qualify. The pay is not great but it is a fascinating career. Hope it helps.
