Which Japanese university should I go to if my major is Linguistics?

Rigourous Linguistics?

  • I'm hoping that a person who uses this area of Y-A and is versed in the basics of linguistic studies could give me the name of a good introductory university level textbook that could help me with the following goal. I've noticed that language has such a rich structure since I was a child but have never known how to go about studying it, nor have I really felt the need to get into the particulars of language. I'm not interested in pursuing linguistics as a job or anything but I'd really like to quantify my use of words, why the structural and temporal aspects of language are so intuitive unconsciously. I find that thinking of these questions can really confuse concepts that are otherwise very intuitive & I'd like to stop that from happening in the future. Steven Pinker's talks, such as this one - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBpetDxIEMU , are a good example of what I'm looking for. I'd get a Chomsky book but it would be very dated and Pinker's work would be more on the pop science end of rigour. Is there a good university level work that is not too difficult that would help me?
