Why cant men multitask?

Men can multitask. Behavioural differences dependent on genetic sexual differences are massively overrated, generally because they produce good soundbites for the media, and hit on the obviously sensitive (and frankly fallacious) argument over whether men or women are superior.

some can. women just tend to be better at it. women naturally have a much better grasp of spacial awareness. that probably makes it easier, as most of the time, at least one of the tasks will require spacial awareness....

I don't think its that men can't multitask, its that generally they are more goal driven, and it is their more natural response and behaviour. I watched a show once that addressed how prehistoric culture and the beginnings of societies may have been the cause of this (general) difference between men and women. The premise was (and it makes sense to me) that men were the hunters, a vital task to primitive survival, and were kept constantly on the move, while women were primarily the gatherers, the hearth keepers and the child rearers. Men were, in a very time restricted fashion, on the go to get from point A to point Z. 'A' being of course where they were and 'Z' being the location of the next animal migration, etc. They had to ensure that they were there at the optimal time to ensure the most successful hunt. Most of their time would have involved an immediate destination with a need to avoid distractions that would hinder or slow them. Women were much more focused on their habitat. They had to ensure (all at the same time) that the fire was kept going, that children were safe, that food was being tended, in additional to the other daily particulars, (such as curing hides, making clothing or coveringsgeting to know the natural plants of their location and harvesting the usable bits) that would have required constantly switching from one task to another.

No one can multitask. If you think you can, male or female, try adding 5 numbers together without adding them 2 at a time. You add two of them, then the third and so on. However, in response to your question, It is often thought that men think in very specific terms so they arrive at specific conclusions - they are precise but that requires intense singular focus, women some people think reach holistic conclusions that lack specificity but are accurate. The basis for the intuition thing. While this is sexist, the concept is probably correct, but probably does not really have anything to do with sex, but style.

It's not true that no men can multitask at all. PEOPLE vary. On average, women do better at multi-tasking than men, on average. Differences between averages of groups are always dwarfed by the variation with in each group. During development of the brain, the amounts and types of hormones, effect the brain in various ways -- that's where the differences come from. but there's tremendous variation in that factor, from pregnancy to pregnancy, and during the course of any pregnancy.

They can to a degree, it's just that when compared to women they fall down a bit. Women have to rock the baby, cook dinner and comfort a screaming child all at the same time. They're born with a natural abitity to multitask. Men don't usually have to do five things at once, so it's harder for them.
