Is it possible for me to take online classes?

Do you think it is possible to take Archeology classes online?

  • I know most won't recommend it, but if something suddenly came up in my life, do you think it is possible to take them online?

  • Answer:

I highly recommend it, if it's something that you wish to do with your life :) To answer your question though, I doubt there are archaeology classes one can take online-it would depend on the University, too. With the way things are changing in colleges, I wouldn't be surprised one bit if you could take a class like that online. However, being a science and hands-on anthropology class, I would imagine that some kind of physical work or "lab" would be involved-something you can't do on the internet. I know that at my school, one can take an archaeology class for a few thousand dollars (without financial aid or scholarship) that lasts for several weeks. Personally, you couldn't pay me a few thousand to stand around and find fossilized garbage. Who knows though, you just may make the next big discovery in this field! Good luck.

Would love to see how they'd have you set up a one meter pit, then excavate.

I don't see how that would be possible. Most online classes that are offered through Universities are bigger, more common classes. Those little colleges you see commercials for that no one really knows about probably have some online courses, but they would never offer a topic like archaeology because they wouldn't have enough people to sign up. Archaeology isn't a type of class that is even offered at all universities, and if it is, it is definitely a regular type of class. You might be able to take an introductory Anthro class (like human origins or cultural anthro) online, but that's all just memorization of terms and dates. My school has over 25k students and we only have an anthro department, not an archaeology department. We have archaeology courses, but not online. You have to be able to understand more than just terms. Archaeology is all about context and you can't really learn that online. The best thing to do, if you're interested in archaeology, is to participate in a field school. Also, there are excavations ALL over the place, so I'm sure you could find one near you and volunteer during the summer if you have a break.
