Would agency theory play a role in the development of agricultural techniques?explain how and give an example?

  • Its for an Anthropology assignment, I couldn't find it in the book (The human past ed Chris Scarre) so I need your help

  • Answer:

Basically the question is: did humans choose to begin agriculture, or what decisions did people make that led to the beginning of agriculture? The simplistic explanation (I think it's wrong) is that people needed more food, so they decided to start growing it. I think it's more gradual... people bring certain plants back to where they live, some rot and their seeds grow in the ground. Then humans have the plants they need where they are. Also, humans would have harvested the most useful (biggest, best tasting) wild plants, which would have an effect on which seeds ended up growing near their settlements. As for techniques, people certainly invent different agricultural tools, develop water management systems, etc. What I would emphasize is that nothing happens suddenly. Especially not something so widespread as agriculture, so while "agency" (basically, decisions made by people) is important, it's not as though someone suddenly decided one day to just begin agriculture.
