What does the scientific community think about scientists or pseudo-scientists that defend Creationism?
-
This answer does not intend to start a discussion about whether people should or should not believe in Creationism. All I want to know is how do scientists and the scientific community feel about scientists that defend publicly Creationism. What do scientists think about all the literature that was created as material that will be used to teach children that Creationism explains how humans appeared in planet earth? How are scientists dealing with the fact that Creationists only refer to the Theory of Evolution as a lie, a misconception, a mistake? If you are a scientist or in some way connected to the scientific community or if you have some information about this, please share your thoughts.

Answer:
Everything from finding them to be a joke, to being infuriated at them. Creationists have a nasty habit of taking what scientists say in defense of evolution wout of context, and using them to cast doubt, and suggest scientists doubt evolution. I know this drove Gould up the wall; he grew to HATE those folks. Scientists are dismayed at the scientific ignorance of the general population, and so are more motivated to get quality science education in schools, and NOT have theology taught as science. Many scientists laugh as "creation theory" which has much absurdity to it, and NO evidence at all. Here are some websites dealing with evolution: http://evolution.berkeley.edu/ http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/exhibits/index.php http://www.newscientist.com/channel/life/evolution http://www.newscientist.com/channel/being-human/human-evolution/dn9990

So-called scientists who defend 'Creationism' (a.k.a. 'Intelligent design') occupy a rightly ridiculed and despised intellectual backwater. They are the intellectual equivalent of those who believed that the stars and planets revolve arount the earth, and Holocaust-deniers. They can't even prove the existence of a God (of whom I say: Treat him as you would any other dangerous psychopath; stay on his good side and don't piss him off!).

I get angry at them because I tend to think they are just selling lies in the vast majority occasions. They get speaking fees, book deals or something like that. Sometimes they are just not the brightest bulb on the tree and in those cases I just get angry at what they say. Normal people don't make me mad but it does irritate me when science is misstated.

I don't take them seriously. if they support creationism they came to their conclusions independent of the scientific method. They are making assumptions and guesses without any evidence to support it. There's nothing to say that dont reach all their 'scientific' conclusions in a similar manner.

They seem them the same way historians see holocaust denial and afrocentricism. Alternative histories that people desperately want to believe for irrational reasons which corrode critical thinking.

I understand your dismay but the problem is that the science is still a young science. There is some faith in the science as I have read even Leakey didn't believe the Australopithecus to be our ancestor, it has not been 100% established and that is a problem with a science that can not be recreated in the lab. As time goes on and more evidence comes about then more credit will be given. It is elitist to disdain the general populace but there is more of a problem for people to elect an unexperience president than poor people believing in something, anything that cares about them. The strict creationist cause as much problem for evolution studies as much as mean spirited hate sprewing atheist cause it.
