How impractical is a major in anthropology?

French & Anthropology major careers?

  • I've spent a lot of time doing research on this, but I still haven't found my answer. Right now, I'm a Freshman who tested into Junior-level classes, so my French major will be easy. Choosing a second major (and/or minor) is more difficult. I'm taking a couple of anthropology courses, and am considering a major in the subject. But I really don't know where a French and Anthropology degree will get me. (I might minor in Chinese, too). Here's my question: A major in French and Anthropology would lead to what career? I don't want to be teacher or do fieldwork. I'd love something with research and writing (something like being an Intelligence Analyst, but I keep thinking that that job's too hard to get). If you majored in either French or Anthropology, what are you doing with it?

  • Answer:

Your best bet is to go on to a graduate degree in one of those fields. That will allow you to continue to be involved in research or writing. If you only have a B.A., unfortunately, you're most likely to end up working in a cubicle somewhere. You might be able to find something really cool to do, but don't bet on it. You sound like you would make a good journalist, BTW.
