Is it hard to learn the acoustic guitar?

  • I am about to learn how to play the guitar soon, my mom has a guitar from her aunt and is going to let me learn how to play it (i love my mom she never forces me to do anything i chosee to learn, haha just saying). My mom is looking for a guitar teacher and i was wondering if it is hard to play, if so whats the hardest part? I am in band right now, i play trumpet so i know the basic notes on a music scale, i know a guitar will be MUCH different. Id like to know what is the hardest part about learning the guitar and does it get easier?

    I've been playing guitar for 40 years and teaching for about 30. I have a lot of young students (both boys and girls). Honestly, the toughest thing about learning guitar at first is to get your fingers into condition. It takes some time to build callouses on your finger tips and your fingers will hurt at first as you're learning to play. That definitely gets better over time. I typically tell my students to only practice for about 15 minutes at a time until their fingers toughen up. Other than that, if you have a good teacher, it's just a matter of following their instruction and practicing regularly. Don't be overly anxious to just start playing songs, but focus on the fundamentals and get a good solid understanding of that and it's really not that difficult to learn. I think you'll find it a bit more difficult than trumpet though because it does require that you develop good coordination with both hands and be able to play multiple notes at once (where you'd only ever really be able to play one note at a time on a wind or brass instrument). Definitely a great instrument to play though!

It is very difficult. I've been teaching for 24 years and more students give it up than stay with it. But it's worth the effort. The hardest parts is learning correct finger position followed closely by learning all the chords and scales. Good luck with it.

in my honest opinion, yes it is hard. Its something you really do have to commit yourself to. The hardest part isnt remembering the positions of the chords its getting your hand to make it. Guitar will really hurt your fingers and hand for the first bit but it does get better and easier!! and it is SUCH a great instrument to know how to play! stick with it!!

Yeah, I read what ol' "Yash' wrote. He never heard of Leona Boyd. Or, all the 'girl bands', huh? It all reflects the recording sales and promotional products in the business too. More girls just buy up the 'boy band' populars and get them to the top, than the boys buying up any girl band renditions. Girls are the mainstay of such media performances and their by-product results. There is always the classical guitar, just made for (but not exclusively) the female hands and fingertips, if not for all others who appreciate that instrument. Including myself. Just go for it and see what happens. Like anything else in life, for goodness sake.

I wanted to stab myself in the eye when I had to learn how to hold it to play the notes properly. But somehow you just stop thinking about it after a week or so and forget that it was ever even hard.. Btw, one of the best players in my class is a girl.

Not to be sexist, but girls are seriously the worst guitar players. learn to sing and take up keyboard and then you can be an asset to a band. men's hands are just bigger and stronger so they get a better position in the guitar hierarchy.
