Movie about a young girl who can sing and is taken in by an old man who can play piano?

Watched it about 10 years ago, It took place maybe in the 1800? The little girl is a singer and everyone falls in love with her. One day she is on the outskirts of town near an old man house. She is on an old bridge and falls into the water. An out casted older man watches and decides he should save her. He didn't want to go into town with her so he took her back to his house and taught her the proper way to sing. Later the town people find out he has been helping her and they think he is hurting her and taking her against her will. SHe tries to explain but the town is upset and form a mob, I think they hang him. We watched this Mondale school and now thinking about it its really deep.
