What is the difference between a spanish and accoustic guitar?

I was told that because I play piano, learning accoustic guitar would be simple?

  • I currently play piano, I have been for five years, and I was looking to learn a new instrument, either cello, violin, or accoustic guitar. I asked a man at a local music store if I could play guitar reading real music, not tabs, and he said yes I would read treble like the piano. He also said that playing guitar would be easy to learn because I can already read music and play piano. Is this true? He didn't know anything about the cello though, as I understand I will have to learn multiple clefs to suit whatever song I play. I understand that whichever I chose I will have to learn new fingerings and such, but is it necessarily true that the guitar will be fairly easy to pick up?

    Yes and no. It will help you with learning how to play it. For example from knowing the triads, and learning which fret produces which note, you'll be able to figure out the simple chords. Sometimes it'll be a matter of playing the same shape but just a fret or two up. However as far as physically playing, I can only think of these two things. Since you have to stretch your left hand sometimes when playing a piece, you might already have more flexibility in your fingers. Likewise the synchronization of both hands may help you as well but picking strings is easy though, fretting them is the hard part. Your hands may be more synchronized and have more flexibility in the fingers of the left hand, but fretting will still take practice. I think he meant it would be easier to learn but not to play necessarily.

It really is simple if you play piano. I did the same thing. I played piano for 8 years and just picked up the guitar a year ago and am about on the same level with both instruments.

It'll help that you can read music already, but it won't help you otherwise. You'll still have to train your fingers to do different things. Violin also uses treble clef so it'd be about the same thing.

Guitar is pretty easy to pick up if you already know piano. If you play classical style you already know how to read the notes. You can learn to read tabs in about five minutes. For cello you only need bass clef until you get to a more advanced level. After that you'd need to know tenor and treble clefs, one of which you already know.

Guitar strings are pitched an octave below that of standard piano notes. Your ability to read music is a huge plus, but I recommend a quick course in learning the specific notes of the six strings. Pick up a booklet titled Hal Leonard's Beginning Guitar Method Book One and inside you will learn the names of the notes in conjunction with the six strings and how they relate to the treble clef. The guitar's Middle C is a full octave below the piano's Middle C and is pitched in the bass clef. To demonstrate play the piano's Middle C and then place a finger on the second string in the first fret. The note pitches should match. Now find the C note a full octave below your piano Middle C and then you will hear the guitar's Middle C. (I can barely reach the piano's Middle C with my voice range.) Your first major hurdle is not understanding the notes and their pitches but building up the needful calluses on your left fingertips. That ordeal takes about two weeks of solid practice everyday.
