How hard would it be to get a music masters degree?
-
Okay, so I'm currently in 10th grade, and I've been thinking about my career choices. I don't see myself doing anything other than music really. My options are singer, high school choir teacher, private voice teacher, Music therapist, (my non musical option would be being a psychologist) So, no matter what I do, I want to master in music. My experience in music is very different than many others though. Singing- I've been singing since the day I was born practically. I've been in choir for about 5 years, and I took voice lessons for half a year last year (I had to stop because we couldn't afford them). Piano- I've been teacher myself the piano for the past 3 years ago. I've taken classes where you play the piano with around 20 other people and get graded on how well you do, but other than that, I'm self taught. I play a lot and I normally do best with sheet music (playing by ear is okay. I have relative pitch, but I just don't have the patience to sit and try to play an entire song like that haha) Theory- I LOVE theory! I took a music theory class a few years ago, and have picked up a few things in choir, voice lessons, and piano studies. I also teach myself theory. I occasionally go to the library and go online to find things to learn.... and learn them (on my own)..... haha So, I have some questions.... 1) How hard would it be to master in music for somebody like me? 2) I realize you have to learn a lot of other instruments.... Would it be hard? Do they teach you? How good do you have to be in the end? Primary, Intermediate, Advanced? 3) What other degrees would I need to go into my career choices? Thanks!! Also, what would be a good college to go to in Michigan, preferably in the South East area of it? I have a really low GPA so this might be hard. (my gpa is like 2.9 to 3.0 but I take all honors classes)

Answer:
Getting into a music program means passing a tough audition and beating out all the other kids who are auditioning for the spaces in a program. Music school is when all the people who thought they were really talented realize that they're actually just average. There's nothing like getting together with all the other kids who were the best musicians in their high schools to make you realize that you're nothing special. Check out various schools you're interested to see what their requirements are. Some may not require a high degree of ability for their music ed. programs. A Music Education degree requires you to learn other instruments. Requirements vary by school. Music therapy programs are a bit different. Check their requirements.

1) It is VERY easy to get your masters in music. As a high school student I could easily smoke any of the Master Graduates in skill and knowledge. It doesnt take much 2)If you go to teach music you have to atleast basically learn the instruments you will be teaching (fingerings, a few basic scales, etc). Yes, they do teach you and it'll be easy dont worry. 3) to teach music you are also going to need get a degree in teaching as well, which by the looks of how many people go for it, it cant be hard 4) I dont really know any good music schools around your area, sorry, but we have great music schools over here in the South.

I think you mean "major" in music - the Masters Degree is what you get by spending an additional 2-3 years of advanced study in college AFTER you graduate with your Bachelors degree. As I read over your current level of preparation it appears to be very thin, and lacking in the serious and continuous private study that would make you a serious and competitive audition candidate. Simply - it really does not look like you can get into any music major program. You would dhave needed to have been taking lesson continuously in your most proficient area - which seems to be voice - and also have won admission already, and through the rest of your HS career, into all the prestigious honors groups offered in your area - all-County, Region, All-State, etc. If you are in 10the grade now, then it might be possible if you took intensive lesson starting tomorrow, with a TOP teacher- but you say that your family circumstances do not allow this. Perhaps you can attend a local community college when you graduate, take academics that would transfer to a 4-year college eventually, and try to get admitted into some music courses at the 2-year college. The faculty there would be able to assess your abilities, and steer you in the right direction - which may or may NOT be towards an eventual degree in music. Self-teaching is useless - you might be trying hard and having fun, and seeing a little progress, but this is a drop in the bucket. I judge hundreds upon hundreds of fine student musicians every year, and it is apparent in mere seconds, who has had good instruction, and who is a DIY project - and that is embarrassing all the way around. Majoring in music is not as simple as "I like this - I think I want to do this in college!". You can do that with, for example, math - you have taken math every single day of school since you started. To say you have been singing since birth - so? All kids sing - and all babies learn to talk, but that does not make them a;; future prosecuting attorneys, does it? Re-think your goals, in light of your lack of legitimate preparation. I wish you luck - but concentrate on raising those grade, even if they ARE AP classes. Sing in college in the chorus, for fun - but do not expect to make this your major, or your career.
