Need help fixing flute?

MY FLUTE IS BROKEN can you please help me I REALLY need it tommorow?

  • There is a screw in my flute that is always loose. One day it became so loose the buttons of my flute came off! I put the keys back so it looked right and put the screw back in. I screwed very tight so it wouldn't come off again. It now won't play middle F Fsharp or E natural. I thought maybr I screwed it too tight so I loosened it, I made it more and more loose and still nothing happned. It still doesn't work. I have to play at the Flute and Clarinet Essemble tommorow and we only have 4 practices before we play so I need my flute so I can play. I'm starting to panick because they can't send to be repaired till Tuesday and I have a private class then and the Essemble would have already met. PLEASE HELP ME

This is definitely something for a qualified repair technician only. The always loose screw should have sent you to the technician before this. In fact, I'm surprised your technician didn't resolve this at your last annual cleaning and adjustment. This is a preventive maintenance and gives your technician the chance to fix a small problem before it becomes a big one. Your only alternative is to rent or borrow a flute. Some shops have loaner flutes for use while they have yours. As an aside, this is another reason I always keep my previous flute when I buy a new one. The older one isn't as nice, but it's better than nothing and always there when I need it. Be happy. Play well. Best wishes.

You need to see a qualified repair person. The screw may be too tight, too loose, or you may have stripped the threads by tightening it too much. Also, when you put it back together, you may not have put all the springs back in their proper places. See a repair person right away!

Check to make sure that all the springs (the tiny little wire things) are in the right place, and haven't fallen out. If you have a key that has fallen off, it may have knocked the spring out of place. Or you may just have a leak in the flute and the key pads may need to be replaced. If you can't get it fixed, though, your best bet would probably be to ask your teacher or even a friend who plays flute to borrow one for your performance or rehearsals.

You won't have it tomorrow. You need to bring it to a repair tech as soon as you can tomorrow. It may take a few days and you will need a rental flute from the music store or borrow one from your school if they have an extra. You probably made things worse by trying to fix it yourself. Screws on a flute are not a job to do yourself, even if you've been playing for a long, long time. Next time, bring it in as soon as you notice loose screws or anything wrong at all. The screw is probably stripped or there is something with the rod since it won't stay in. This may not be a cheap trip to the music store... sorry.
