The reality is, at any talent showcase like IPOP, AMTA, ProScout, etc, etc maybe 5% of attendees may get contacted by an agent and 95% go home empty handed. It's those 95% who run around screaming scam. But it's not actually a scam - you are getting what you paid for. All the company promises is that you will be able to perform in front of agents - they don't promise that anyone will get signed. That's up to the agency if they are interested or not. And the reality is, 95% of attendees either don't have the right experience and training for acting, or the right physical requirements for modeling For acting, an agency is only going to look at people with at least 2-3 years experience acting in community theatre, school plays, student films, etc and training from the best schools in their area. Agents never look at wannabes - an agent will only sign someone who has already proven they are talented enough to be cast over and over in leading roles in amateur productions and are taking their career seriously enough that they are investing in the best training they can find. For modeling, you are not being judged on your own merits. You are being compared against all of the other attendees. Most of the agencies attending these type of conferences are fashion agencies who are looking for girls 5'8" - 6" with measurements within 1" of 34-24-34 and guys 6' - 6'4" wearing a 42" Long jacket. They want someone they can put on the runways within weeks. If you don't meet these requirements you won't get picked for modeling Also there is no reason to attend a showcase in another city unless you are willing and able to move to the agent's city within 3-4 weeks. So if you live in Atlanta and an agent in Chicago is interested, you have to move to Chicago. If you can't, the agent won't represent you. If you are not in a position to move, then there is no reason to go to a showcase as it costs nothing to submit to local theatrical and modeling agencies. You don't need a showcase for this. Just mail your headshot and resume to theatrical agencies, or send in a headshot and full body shot to modeling agencies and if they are interested, they'll contact you.
