Guitar help? : )?

i want to pick up guitar. im a quick learner and i absoultely love music............. i want to play the electric guitar..im left handed and the guitar doesnt need to be left handed (or would it be much easier that way? i play trumept and its right-handed and trombone too..) the problem is i need a guitar from a trustable place such as musician's friend or somewhere where i could go play it. my mom doesnt trust ebay ; ) (or similar stores) it can be up to 200 or possibly 250 dollars.. i want to be a band director when i go out into the world after college and i'll have to learn to play all the instruments anyways... i already play trumpet, trombone, and baritone. any ideas on guitars for me? (i'd really prefer not to play bass though, i really like the lead parts better..after playing trombone for four years, i tend to think that way. ) thanks!

Answer:
with guitar, a lot of people dont realize it is mainly a chordal instrument. lead lines are fun, but while playing guitar you will probably only spend 15 to 20% of your time playing leads if that much. most of the time you will be strumming chords to create a rhythm backbone for others to build off. now for your question. DO NOT BUY YOUR FIRST GUITAR ONLINE. buy your guitar from a music store in your area. if you look around i am sure you will find one within 50 miles of where you live. they will help you find a teacher (YOU WILL NEED A TEACHER ) they will also help you set up your guitar, show you how to tune it, and give you advice. you probably already know the basics of music theory from your wind instruments, but with guitar you will begoing into a whole different world. when you play your first open G chord, you will be playing a full horn section with your two hands. the only other instrument that can compare is the piano, but hey, you cant carry that slung around your back too easy can ya? one tip i would suggest is get an acoustic electric guitar for your first instrument. you can carry it everywhere and play it whenever you want without looking for an electrical outlet. also you can play solos on them as easily as on electric if you have it set up right. (i suggest an ovation celebrity, about 350 with hardshell case) . some good websites to look at after you get your guitar www.guitarnoise.com - lots of old articles www.ibreathemusic.com - check out dave hodges articles www.folkofthewood.com - basic note reading on guitar www.harmony-central.com - lots of user reviews and tabs without all the nasty pop ups and garbage.

i got my first guitar (a washburn BT-2) from a friend who it was his first guitar and he didnt use it anymore. Ask your friends if they know anybody who has a great guitar that they are giving away or selling for a low price. If yes, then go try it out and feel it, hear the sound, check for damage...if no, then try a music store (you can always go to the store first anyway, and i got my ibanez from a very small store) but at the music store if you see a good guitar, ask to play it and even tho its a store, check for damages. if you like it, ask for the price. Find out info about the guitar too. Good Luck

Don't you have a Music Store in your city? Sam Ash or Guitar Center would be the place to go. You can try them out and see what appeals to you.

Try a baby Taylor. They're small, so they're easy to carry around, but they have the sound of a full guitar. If that doesn't suit you or you just don't know what to look for in a guitar, go to www.amillionguitars.com and read the article. It tells you exactly what to look for in a guitar. Hope that helps!! Good luck with music!!

Thanks to your Mom, don't ever buy a guitar off of E-bay, they had one on there last month for a penny, can you imagine what that sounded like !!!! Get a Yamaha acoustic electric, I play classical guitar and when I went to buy a new one I started to fool around with this Yamaha and I loved it, it sounded good acousticly just as it did when pluged into an amp, and it was only $250.00 and the clerk gave me a deal and reduced the price, this was at the Guitar Center, they will always give you a deal, just ask. If you want an idea about the sound go on youtube and listen to this girl playing a black guitar sitting on the floor in what looks like her bedroom, playing Green Days, Boulevard of Dreams, just type in the song name and then scan until you see her, and the Yamaha sounds like that. Make sure that you play them all, I tell everyone this, as all guitars have a different feel, sound, and action. That's one of the things that I like about the Center you can sit it there and play for hours with the guitars, and if you buy one and take it home you can still bring it back after you've played it for a while, they allow you 30 days on returns. If you buy an amp that will cost you a little more, but you can buy the guitar and save for the amp because like I said it sounds great even without the electric. Good luck to you. Try some of these sites when your first learning and see what you think. I hope that your going to learn to read music !!!!!! http://www.jamplay.com/ http://www.billbrutal.com/ http://www.cyberfret.com/ http://www.guitar.about.com/ http://www.justinguitar.com/ http://www.guitarchordsmagic.com/ http://www.chordfind.com/ These are just a few that I know of, I hope that their all still there, a lot of them are dropping off.

If you're going to be a band director study CLASSICAL guitar and get a classical guitar. The education you get from it will be invaluable in band directing and very useful in the classroom. Music Ed majors are required to have a class in guitar nowadays. I've taught these college classes. To the person who said ' with guitar, a lot of people dont realize it is mainly a chordal instrument. lead lines are fun, but while playing guitar you will probably only spend 15 to 20% of your time playing leads if that much. most of the time you will be strumming chords to create a rhythm backbone for others to build off'- That's only true for pop and rock. Classical guitar is fully multi-voiced , harmony and melody all the time.
