How do you get over stage fright???!?
-
Stage fright is really a problem for me. I am an instrumentalist, and whenever I have a performance (mainly when i'm playing solo in a recital), I get all these physical symptoms of stage fright. My hands start to tingle, which makes it difficult to play my instrument, and my breathing gets really messed up, which also really screws up my playing. I also love to sing and want to audition for a chorus (also for an instrumental ensemble) when I start college this fall, but I'm terrified for auditions. I feel like if I could get rid of the physical symptoms of stage fright I would fine, because otherwise I would love performing but the stage fright always screws me over. I don't want to take medication like beta blockers because they sound really dangerous, but are there any herbal remedies for stage fright that work? I know that there's all those breathing excercises, mental preparation, etc. but my problem is the physical symptoms that won't go away. How do I get rid of them??? Please help!! thank you!

Answer:
Try taking deep breaths, and even stretch to relax your body. I go into a quiet area, and just close my eyes and reflect upon what I'm going to do and put everything into a peaceful perspective. I used to get shaky legs, and would really want to vomit. However, by staying mentally calm I was able to take control of my body and its unpleasant reactions. I agree with you, do not take medication. Health food stores sell natural stress relieving chews made from various natural flower oils. I don't think that would fully solve your problem, but perhaps it would take the edge off. But most importantly, realize that what you do is a deeply respectable form of self expression. Release those emotions into your instrument, and let it resonate into the audience. A little adrenaline is a good thing with performance! I think a calmer mind yields a calmer body. Good luck with the stage fright issue, it is definitely something I would think all musicians can relate to!

I also suffered from stage fright. I play the piano, and whenever I would play in front of an audience i would freeze up. Now i dont do that anymore. I've learned to focus only on the moment and how much I love what I am doing. Think about all the people who would be grateful to have a talent like yours, and you will feel more confident. Know that you are blessed with a talent, and you shouldn't waste it. I dont know of a way to overcome the physical aspects of stage fright without first overcoming the mental aspects. It's all in your head. If you really enjoy what you do, then you shouldn't be afraid. Hope I helped. :)

I can sympathize with you completely as I used to consider talking in public more frightening than anything on earth. But the only way to get over that fear is practice, practice, practice. I learned in the military, but any public speaking or leadership position (such as a work supervisor, etc) can definitely help. Also, have confidence in yourself.

Perhaps you should talk to somebody who is an expert on the subject..even someone who is or has been on stage. In my opinion..put it this way: You''re entertaining people as i see as something you like to do. Think of it as a joy and what makes you feel good.

You don't. I harness my stage fright and use it to fuel my performance. It results in a more passionate performance and you then don't play the "would have, could have, should have" game.

Well, if it's music your playin, for me at least that right there is what calms me and makes me feel good. You've got your music and just get into it!

Honestly, find a role model. find someone, probably another musician, weather he be someone you kno personally or someone very famous, who is very outgoing onstage and become inspired by them. watch their performances alot and when you are on stage yourself try to think of them. and honestly alot of times it works. if you become really inspired by people you tend to start to be like them in alot of ways i kno when i was younger i took alot of dance lessons and at first i was shy, but there was this girl in my class who had so much confidence and danced like no one was watching and put her heart and soul into it and it inspired me so much, so I took on that same trait myself. also I remember always looking up to Madonna's stage presence and how confident she was onstage and it also inspired me alot. having role models help alot. once you get used to not caring you tend to stop caring. those people are watching to see you deliver. so give it to them and dont hold back :).
