What's the best acoustic guitar?

Whats the best acoustic guitar to record with?

  • I have a yamaha with Martin Acoustic SP strings but it just doesn't have the Colbie Caillat guitar im going for. Whats the best Acoustic Guitar and strings that i can use to get that bright vibrant sound thats not so restricted? Thanks and preferably 100-200 dollars. Thank you.

  • Answer:

For a brighter sound you'd probably want a smaller bodied concert or orchestra model guitar. If you're playing a dreadnought you'll get a more bassy sound. But that can be compensated for with different strings and EQ settings. I play a Guild dreadnought. Use light gauge strings and run the guitar through a good EQ to tweak the tone to your liking. I run mine through a Zoom G2.1u pedal and into my computer for recording via the USB output on the pedal (no mic involved). I have a patch I created on the pedal that EQ's it the way I like for finger picking and adds some octave pitch shift for a bit of a 12-string effect. Minimally, get some new light gauge strings though and see how it sounds. You're not going to get a good orchestra model guitar for under $300.

Not gonna happen in that price range. It is also not as much as what guitar is used but how it is recorded. The best acoustic recordings use very nice (and somewhat expensive) guitars and very high quality microphones, usually combined with some type of transducer pickup in the bridge of the guitar. These elements are put through some very nice preamps to get even better sound quality. You can use an acoustic electric guitar or a good acoustic guitar pickup ran into the recorder or computer interface to get decent results. The pickup will cost about $100. A decent acoustic electric will set you back about $250.

In your price range the acoustic guitars are all plywood. Spend more and get an all solid wood guitar that's medium size like a 000 or an OM. Dreads are too boomy and dont record well.

Ibanez make great low priced guitars. In your situation, the mic you're trying to record with might be a problem. Research different recording mics. You get what you pay for.

Understand, now with the others advice that your price range is restricting you from even a 'good' guitar to start with for recording or performing. And, there's a lot more to learn when you are trying to skimp on recording gear and having a home set up to your preferences. To obtain the sound of particular music you may hear (as mentioned), realize that any music heard either over the air waves, by CD, DVD or even live performances most often is enhanced by further amplification, pre-amping and/or sound modification through other, signal routing equipment. The difference as example of listening to someone over a cell phone, and that same voice right in front of you. Same source, different (slight enough) reproduction of frequency signal ranges.

You'll want an acoustic bass guitar
