Could any saxophone expert help me choose a sax?

I need some guidance about saxophone from an expert please.?

  • Hi, I appreciate if some could help to choose the right sax to start with. I am 30 years old and very much familiar with music. I have been playing the guitar for 18 years professionally but I have no idea about woodwinds. I am interested in sax but I don't know alto or tenor and also if it is reliable to buy from eBay to start with. and what I have to look for. Thank you.

  • Answer:

For an adult, alto or tenor doesn't make a difference. Yes, you'll need more air for the tenor, but it won't make it any more difficult as you are learning from scratch anyway. For someone that does not know instruments, Ebay is not reliable. There are tons of saxophones on there for 100-200 bucks including shipping, but they are cheap no-name instruments. I would recommend renting from your local music store first as this allows you to try the instrument before spending hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars to buy something that you may not like learning.

I'm not a saxophone player, but I am working on my masters in flute performance, and am fairly familiar with the saxophone world. If you're just starting, it's easier to go with something you can find on ebay than if you happen to be an advanced student or a professional. The problem that I've run into with my own students, however, is that the beginning instrument makes ALL the difference in the world. It's so much easier to get frustrated playing on an instrument with, for instance, leaky pads or a mechanism that is adjusted badly than it is with an instrument in good repair, set up by professionals. This is why I would recommend going to an instrument dealer who specializes in your instrument (if possible), and make sure that your first saxophone is a solid instrument that is properly adjusted! I hope this helps... I wish someone had given me this advice years ago!

Maybe you should start with clarinet and switch to the sax. Also, buy it at a music store and not at Costco or where you can't examine it. The mouthpiece should be good quality (Clark Forbes "Debut") and you need reeds (Vandoren or Rico Royal).
