Music is a force inside of you that screams for some type of release. Whether you do it with a lead guitar or a bass or some other instrument is a call that you are going to decide on. You don't do music to get attention. You play and practice because it brings you great joy and inner peace. When people do compliment your playing, you should accept praise with humility and thank them for listening. The fact that they even stopped to listen means that you have communicated non verbally with another and that they get it. When I play or practice with a group, I love to watch the reaction of children. They are uninhibited, they will dance or respond rhythmically to what you are playing. That's when music makes the most sense to me.

Dude, it's all about which one you're most passionate about. I have both, so maybe you get both too. It's also good if you know how to play both, bandwise.

If you want to be in a decent band you'd better be one hell of a guitarist. Guitar players are everywhere so to get a good gig you have to be a guitar god. Bassist on the other hand are hard to find so your chances of getting in a band are far greater. On the flip side of that you can't really amuse yourself at home much playing bass. Laying down a bass line with no other musicians isn't nearly as fun as playing a song on guitar. So you really just have to decide what your main goal is. If you want to be on stage, playing bass will increase your chances a lot.

Like another user said, there is no shortage of lead guitar players. Every second teenage guy I know plays electric- if you want to be noticed and make it into more than a hobby, you have to practice very very hard and develop your own style that will make you stand out. If you play bass however, you may find your progress a little quicker and joining a good band easier. Depending on what style, bass players get a lot of attention too and solo opportunities. If you love both, why not pay one on the side just for kicks and play the other one seriously?

You really have to decide that one for yourself then. I play guitar (started when I was 7 and am in my late 40's now). My older brother plays bass very well, I play it some. I prefer guitar because I also sing and it's much easier playing guitar and singing than it is playing bass and singing. I like to be able to sit down with my guitar and work out the chords to a song and sing along to it. I know some amazing bass players though who can sit down and just jam on the bass and play some incredible stuff (my brother is one of them). As others have said, it's probably easier to land a job in a good band as a mediocre bass player (depending on what style of music you're into - metal & rock maybe, but if you're into jazz you better be pretty good on bass if you want to be successful in that genre). Since you like Flea & Slash, I'll go out on a limb and say jazz is not your cup of tea though. Listen to some Victor Wooten stuff and maybe that will sway you toward bass. You can do some phenomenal stuff on bass just like guitar if you learn the instrument properly, understand music theory, learn scales, and have good improvisational skills. Or you can just pluck out the root note of each chord and being totally boring and mediocre just like a guitarist who just learns a few power chords and beats them out on their guitar with a lot of distortion. Which instrument you choose is not nearly as important as the level of devotion, practice, and talent you pour into it.

Well if you can play electric guitar, than you can play pretty much play bass guitar but not not the other way around so I'd say get the electric. However I do know a bassist that used to play guitar but he said it was too hard for him so he took up bass. Me on the other hand just stuck with guitar and love it!!!!

I think you should go to a music store that sells everything. They should be able to help more than this website.

Man, wished some of you guys would paragraph more often. Voted for the better answers. I play both, love both. Both can be very creative and rewarding. Love all guitars in general. Classical too. Even cheap guitars. 12 strings. Can't keep my hands off them, when I see them. Keyboards and pianos too. Organs also. Not addicted, but appreciative of all guitars and women. Love all music styles and its history. I do have other interests in my life, believe it or not. Good food, drive in the country, BB-Q's. Places by the lake shore. Live performances. Music. (Did I mention that before?) Nuff said, get on with it. Do it, if it feels good.
