How often do you change your guitar strings (for electric)?
-
i play kinda regularly, and i change mine once the strings go off tune easily. i'm not asking how often to change them, i'm just wondering how often YOU guys change them.. oh yeah, random question: who's your favorite guitarist?

Answer:
I play in a working band. We practice and play gigs several times a month. I practice with another "for fun" band. I practice at home. Between practice and gigs, my guitar gets a lot of use. The new string brightness goes away sometime in the first month and if I followed my own advice, that's when I should change strings. In reality, I change them 2-3 times a year. With the electric guitar, I can (somewhat) compensate for the string's loss of brightness by turning up the treble/presence control on my amp. I don't have that option on my acoustic, and I change those strings more frequently. I appreciate guitar players for the soul they put into their playing...not how flashy they are. BB King, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Bonnie Raitt to name a few......

A new guitar player changes strings when they break. An intermediate player changes strings by the calendar. An advanced player changes strings when they no longer sound great.

Some people think strings sound best when brand new. Personally, I like it best when they're about a week old. Generally, I change them only when they start to loose their sound. I don't have a set interval. Only when they need changing. Which is not very much. You can extend the life of strings (and sometimes bring back old strings) by a good cleaning. I run up and down the length of the string with a clean rag, dipped in rubbing alcohol. And do this for each string. I clean my strings frequently. As a matter of course, I wipe them with a clean cloth after every playing session. My fave guitarist...? There are a number I admire, some you've never heard of. But a few names off the top of my head are: Carlos Santana, John McLaughlin, Ritchie Blackmore, (the late) Frank Zappa, (the late) George Harrison, et al. But there is one guitarist who's playing I take the most interest in...myself, naturally. I've been playing for 40 years, and one day, I'll get it right.

Depends, I have 4 electric guitars, and I play 1 more often than the others because it's newer. I change those every 4-8 weeks, but really, I like to change them when I can feel them getting a little dull, to the point where it's harder to slide up and down on them (when you notice a little bit of friction). I use Ernie Ball strings now, because they have that slick feeling to them. Sometimes I get lazy and won't change them very often. When I go back to the other guitars, they'll be old and corroded, or rusted a little bit, so when I play them, I usually change the strings and play them for awhile until the strings lose that bright tone, which is usually about 3-6 weeks. Favorite guitarist? Hard question. Here's a run down of the list and who inspired me. 1994 - Kirk Hammett/ Jimmy Page/ Toni Iommi 1996 - Thurston Moore (sonic youth) 1998 - Eric Clapton 2000 - Buckethead (made me wanna quit playing) 2004 - David Gilmour 2008 - Paul Gilbert (in terms of talent and skill and giving cool lessons and video's) 2009 - Joe Satriani (in terms of talent, I can't stand his music though) 2010 - the guys from Avenged Sevenfold (I'm not a huge fan of the music, but I really like their solo's) I'm starting to get back into the classic rock stuff, and have a new found love with Iommi, because I can now play his style very well, which is based around the pentatonic scale, with string bends, lots of legato, and throwing in incidentals every now and then to make his stuff a little bluesier.

They lose their bright sound due to dirt and sweat really every 6 weeks............some people suggest boiling strings in water which I tried and it really wasnt satisfactory. When they sound dull, change them. Guitarist David Gilmour
