What are some good audition songs to audition for the musical Company?

Good audition songs for Musical theatre (please help!)?

  • So for my local theatre company, they're having auditions for Legally Blonde (the show that was on broadway, but it's off now so I guess that's how they got the show.. but anyways) the auditions are in a month. And I really want to get a good role. I've done a show their before a few years ago, so I think I'll have a better chance at getting a good role. But I'm having a hard time deciding on a song. I've thought of singing "Johnny One Note" from Babes in Arms, that song because it holds a long note. And in the song "So Much Better" it holds a long note too. So that's why I thought of it.. I also thought of "Waiting for Life" from Once On This Island. But it's like a 5 minute song and I don't know where to cut it. And for Johnny one Note I've been singing it for auditions since I was 14, and have always gotten a callback and a role from singing that song. I am also having trouble on a monologue for the audition. I was thinking of doing Louisa's monologue from "The Fantasticks".... but I don't know if that would be appropriate, but I don't know if a lot of people would be doing that monologue. PLEASE HELP. I really want to get a lead, or at least a good principal role. SERIOUS ANSWERS ONLY PLEASE! AND NO POP SONGS! OR POPULAR SONGS ON THE RADIO

  • Answer:

You want a song (generally 16-32 measures, or about 1 minute) that shows your full range. Dont pick a song just because it has a long note. There are many books out there with great selections (w/ accompaniment) I suggest investing in one if you are going to be serious about musical theatre. It will give you more options so you are not just a one song sally. When doing a monologue, look for something that has strong character development. Show the character arch (how the character grows) use different tactics (are you pleading, seducing, exhorting, destroying) to reach your (characters) ultimate goal. I suggest that you read the play you are doing a monologue from so that you can fully grasp the true meaning of the piece and the subtext and what is really going on. Research is a very important part on picking a piece. Also, be sure to pick something that fits your age range. If you are 26 but look older, dont do a piece where the character is 12 and vice versa, if you are young, dont do a piece where the charcter is old. No one should tell you what pieces (songs) to do. This is a process that you should explore and find for yourself. When you dig into pieces to find that perfect one you will know. If someone just gives it to you you dont get the satisfaction of knowing for a fact that you can make it in the professional world of theatre on your own.
