How to play static dominant and functional dominant chords?

How do you play chords, where your fingers have to be far away?

  • Okay so I was going to play this song, but its incredibly hard for me to place my fingers on the guitar without taking a finger off a fret. I am trying to play Ebm, and I hate barre chords. Do any of you have any advice for me? I'm self taught. Mostly the barre chords I've learned are cheat barre chords. I really would like to do the barre's instead. Any advice other than just practice?

  • Answer:

If you just keep practicing then you will get it down. Trust me it took me forever to learn it but i practiced every day and now i got it down perfectly! Good Luck!

It depends. If you have small hands, you'll have to struggle a bit. It is usually hard to press down on the strings on an acoustic guitar, especially if the action is high. If you're new to barre chords, practice is all you've got. Try rolling your 1st (index) finger so you press down with the side of your finger, and try and curve it so your finger isn't straight. It would look a bit like this...(not sure if the picture will work) http://www.fretjam.com/images/barre-chord-video.jpg I know this is probably not what you're looking for, but if you're interested in pursuing the guitar further, consider getting an electric guitar, or a guitar with slimmer neck. good luck!

Consider using the thumb to catch the fifth and sixth strings at the fretboard. While that practice is frowned upon by certified guitar instructors and the classical guitar genres, the method works well as it has been for me for the past 55 years.

With Ebm the fingers don't have to stretch much, it's one of the easier barre chords. Really, practice is the only answer.

So how's the whole self-teaching thing working out for you? Perhaps it's time to get some lessons with a professional guitar teacher. Give it a try.
