People tend to be sharply divided over Ovation guitars; for every person who loves them there's someone else who hates them. I'm in the second camp, unfortunately. I have never played one that I liked. They all seem to have thin tone and are uncomfortable to play as they tend to slide off your lap because of the round back. I doubt that either one has solid koa at that price point so you're getting plywood with koa on the top ply. I doubt that plywood sounds anything like solid koa, which in any case is more commonly used for back and sides than for top. I've never played a Dean so I can't comment on them. Your best bet is to try both guitars and a bunch of others and then buy the one you like best. Goodall makes by far the best koa guitars but they're way, way beyond your price range.

I'd actually recommend the dean because I don't like the composite body of the ovation. But I don't know much about the differenced of these two. I'd actually recommend a fender stratacoustic because it also has a thin body and a good sound :) And if you're buying a guitar I'd recommend you buy it straight from the shop, since you would be able to test it out and you would see if there are any manufacturing problems.
