Should I learn trumpet?

  • I have been playing clarinet for 5 years I am 14 and first chair. I am going to be going to high school next year and there is a jazz band. My father played the trumpet when he was little but then quit. I am going to teach my self with the Standard of Excellence books. I was talking to the jazz band teacher and he said that i could then be in jazz band, but I said that I prob. won't be good enough after just learning it for one summer, and he said that I would make it. My dad said her would get me a used trumpet. Do you think I should play it? Do you have any tips?

    I think you could do it. The face muscles used to play clarinet are used to make a sound on a brass instrument so you should already have some endurance developed. I would suggest focusing on simple overtone exercises (where you change pitch without changing the valves) at first because that will probably be the biggest change from clarinet. Don't jam the trumpet into your face and try to remember to keep your fingers curved when pressing the valves. If you lips get tired, whistling (or attempting to) can help them recover, but don't practice to the point where you're in pain. Since you already have the ability to play an instrument, I would also suggest going for a lesson or two with someone who can help make sure you're not developing any bad habits. :)

well i have been in ur same position. im first chair flute in 9th grade band and soloist. its very hard to get to this point. u prob have a gift. if music comes naturally to you then i think u may want to pursue the trumpet. but, if ur just good at ur instrument and practice alot. stick with the clarinet. TRUMPET: -very hard -always heard; must be veryyyyy confident -usually harmonic line, sometimes boring to be honest i think u should stick with clarinet and if u want to do jazz band then do saxophone. it sounds better and if u really are good at learning u will be magnificent :) good luck :D PS: the jump from 8th to 9th grade playing is tremendouse u may get overwelmed. its a whole new world of playing. welcom to TUNER LAND ahha :)

the trumpet is a very difficult instrument,you have to really love it and want to play it;examine your reasons for playing it carefully.

Try it if you are buying used and can resale if you do not like it then there will be no loss. Just time and only trying it will tell. rd

I think you should. I would kill to be able to play every instrument (its actually a goal I am aiming for). Plus with the knowledge you already have (from the clarinet) about music, then the trumpet shouldn't be too difficult. I started on the saxophone and the trumpet wasn't too hard to learn for me. Just took some time to adjust to the playing more with your mouth than fingers, but it goes away after a couple of weeks.

it always good to know how to play 2 instruments but to the trumpet you have to stay committed if you play both it changes your ombisure you can always play trumpet or clarinet for jazz band but check out the marching band bc they always good instrumentalist

Go for it! Im a trumpet player and i say why not! But remember! Your going from a woodwind to a brass! Its a whole different game! You really have to focus and practice! You have to maintain a proper embouchure also! Playing from books would help a lot but you might need lessons from someone because you can't learn certain things from a book! Good luck!! :)
