How can I start my band?

  • I have a band. I won't tell you the name or anything yet because my "band" is just me and 3 other friends who write rock music and we practice. But how do we even start? First, how do I make my band name official so that nobody is allowed to steal it? Second, how do we play our first gig and more later? I heard you need a manager but where do I find one? Please don't recommend a friend because they want "REAL" jobs. Not the people in our band but other friends want real jobs. I'm sorry about all the questions, but there's more. Also, how do I record an album we already wrote? Then, how do we have the songs put on millions of CDs? Next, how to we make stores sell those CDs like the real bands? Next, how do we get our songs played on the radio like real bands? Also, what are record labels for and is it easier to get famous through them? Also, how do we go from playing at restaurants and small gigs, to large stadiums that guns n roses and led zeppelin played? How do we get music videos played on tv and whatnot? Lastly, who do we go to once we have recorded our first album? Where does that recording go and what do we do with it? How does it go to the shelf of stores and how to get it played on radio? Lastly, I promise, how can we get famous? If THOUSANDS of bands can do it, I think we have a shot at it. Sorry for all the questions but we have NO CLUE what to do or where to start. ABSOLUTLY nothing. Please answer the questions and don't tell us keep dreaming or whatever. All famous bands career began with dreams of success.

You can't make your band name official so that nobody can steal it if you're not big. To play your first gig, make sure that you have a set list first, then look online or in the paper for places that are looking for bands. If you can't find any, go to local bars and restaurants and see if they have any live music played there and try to get in there. You don't need a manager until you are big. Don't get ahead of yourself. To record an album, go to a recording studio. Put the songs on the CDs yourself, or if the recording studio will do it for you, have them do it. Don't make millions of CDs. Make about 30 or so and once you sell them, make more. To get places to sell your CD, ask a store owner. You can't just make a company buy your CD and sell it. They'll only do it if you're good. Same with getting on the radio, ask a local station to play your stuff. If they like it, chances are they will. Record labels market your CD basically, you should be well known (played in quite a few towns/cities) to get approached by one, if one approaches you while you're still fairly unknown, chances are, they're trying to just take your money. It's easier to get famous through them though, you just have to be very careful. In the end, you'll only get famous by your talent though. You're gonna just have to work your way up through the gig ladder. You'll eventually get bigger and bigger crowds. To get music videos on TV, it's extremely hard work. You'll have to be already big and famous for a TV station to even look at you. Secondly, your music video must be of high quality to be played, you don't want some crappy video shot with a cell phone in your basement. Getting famous is all about your talent, just because you say "thousands" of bands can do it doesn't mean it's easy. It's one of the hardest ways to make a living in the entertainment industry. Never think you're gonna be famous. Just let it happen. Bands may start with dreams of success, but it doesn't matter what your dreams are, it matters how you put those dreams into action, and with your actions, I believe you can do it.

-You can't copyright the name of the band. -Look for open mic sessions. Have business cards/t-shirts printed. Look for charity events that are seeking a band. Look for competitions. -Don't get a manager yet. You don't need one. -To record demos you can buy a usb interface, two mics, and record at home. I use a bigger version of this interface, works perfectly. Comes with the software you need: http://www.amazon.com/PreSonus-AudioBox-Advanced-Recording-Interface/dp/B005G6CZRE%3FSubscriptionId%3DAKIAJASE6HSSVXTNREYQ%26tag%3Dfstchrm-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB005G6CZRE?afsrc=fstfx And buy all-purpose mics like these: http://www.amazon.com/Shure-SM57-LC-Cardioid-Dynamic-Microphone/dp/B0000AQRST/ref=sr_1_1?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1325655413&sr=1-1 -To have your songs put on CDs that will be distributed to stores, you have to sign with a label. They do the marketing for you. -Not thousands of bands get to play at stadiums. Many do get to play at mid-sized venues though. And having a concert at a stadiums costs alot. So basically you have to be famous enough for your manager to be sure that your band will sell enough to make profit from hosting a concert at a stadium. -Again, you make your music video, put it on youtube, and gain popularity. Then they might air it on Tv. -To have a demo played on the radio is the best way to get started. Record your demo, mail to every radio station in the nation if possible, and if you're good, you'll gain popularity.

On band name: contrary to what others have said, a band name can be a legally defensible trademark. If you start playing gigs calling yourselves "Weezer," pretty soon you will get a cease and desist letter from Weezer's lawyers and get dragged into court if you ignore it. You don't need to do anything to "make it official," just keep records of when you started playing paid gigs under the name so that if someone else uses it, you can show evidence that you were using it first as a business name. Gigs come from pounding the pavement. If you're under 18, you're going to be pretty limited - you can play at school events or other youth events, maybe a coffeehouse, town festivals, things like that. You have to be over 18 to play at establishments that serve alcohol, which is where the bread and butter is for most working bands. Most areas have a local newspaper that lists nightlife in the area, and you'll find the names of bars and clubs with live music there, as well as open mics. Play at open mics for practice at live performance and to meet the owners of the venues. Put a promo pack together (demos, picture, band bios) and a website (try www.reverbnation.com) and start talking to managers to get gigs. These days it helps a lot if you have a big crowd of friends, family, and fans who will show up to support you - remember the venue managers bring bands in because it helps them sell more drinks. Now, you can work the local bar circuit just playing covers without ever doing an original song of your own. To make it big playing originals is a big jump. You'll be less in demand at bars and parties because people like to dance to music they already know. But you can do it, if you pick the right places to play and can build a fan base. Young people and college students are usually more open to new music than the thirty-something crowd. Basically, if you can build a fan base, then you become locally known. More venues will be willing to let you play there, and bigger venues. IF you have a reliable local following, you can get invited to be the opening act for a national band when their tour is passing through your part of the country. Do well on the tour, and you can attract the attention of a record label, get on national tours and do an album of your own. The record company will take care of selling "millions" of copies of your song and booking you into huge arenas. Before you're at the record-label stage, you should certainly record your originals. This book is a pretty good guide... http://www.amazon.com/Recording-Musicians-Dummies-Career-Education/dp/111810689X/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1325678327&sr=1-1. You can do a demo with something as simple as one of these... http://www.amazon.com/TASCAM-DP-008-8-Track-Digital-Portastudio/dp/B002YNY8GI/ref=sr_1_10?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1325678409&sr=1-10, but the more quality you want, the more gear you'll need to invest in, or you can rent studio time in a professional studio. Just ask at your local music store for recommendations of studios. Be warned, that hitting the big time is not easy, no matter how good you are. I was just reading about Fishbone recently - amazing band, seemed poised to hit the mega-big-time in the early 90s, but somehow it never quite took off, the band imploded for a while, and they've struggled along playing in small houses for minor money. Promotion is expensive and doesn't always work, and once you do start making money there are lots and lots of people all angling for a cut of it. The old joke is, "How do you make a million dollars in the music business? -- Spend two million."

Hey, sorry, but im not gunna answer your question, because you didn't answer mine. Go back to when I asked if anybody could list all of Justin Biebers interviews. Now, you'll know what im talking about. And do you know what I think is not fair? That you keep hating on a kid that did not do ANYTHING to you. No, no im not trying to steer my life so it could be like his, I actually laughed when I read that. Im INTERESTED in the guy, thats all. No need to make it all complicated for you to pretend your the smartest person in the world. Yes, I do want to become an actor, because I have a PASSION for it, like im sure you have a passion for your band. I just wanted to see whats it's like, to be interviewed, and what Justin Bieber is like simply because im interested in him. And you certainly have no right to start saying that he uses stuff to make his voice better, all he has to do is look good. Guess what? He has a REAL voice. If you haven't noticed, he has over 15 million followers on twitter, all people that love him and believe in him, because he followed his dream, and has a GREAT voice. Would he be famous if it was just some auto tuned crap? Well, it's not. Give the guy RESPECT. He broke his leg on stage and carried on through the whole song. Have you EVER even listened to pray? God knows he deserves respect, and here you are, probably jealous of him, so you want to take out something on him? Now THAT'S not fair. Oh, and good luck with your band.
