Whats A Good Alto Sax?

Whats the best way to learn how to improvise on the alto/soprano sax?

  • im on grade 2ish standard on both im really into jazz and its like vital for me to start getting good at improvising on the sax whats the best way to go around doing this? any tips? and also - does anyone know how long it will take to get really good?

    Right, learn the scales and maybe even think of what you'd like to play and write it out, because improvising is really spontaneous composition. Eventually you'll get good at it. Mainly, after learning the scales and chords, just take a breath and play. As for how long it takes, it's more of how much you practice and your own abilities. Everyone's different, but you should start finding yourself coming up with some cool things before long. Also, there are the Aebersold play along CDs, where you play to a recording of a rhythm section. I used them a lot. Start with the basic ones, if you decide to go that way. http://www.aebersold.com As you advance, another technique is to transcribe solos that you like and learn that way, but you can always figure out and borrow phrases that you like.

Learn the scales. If your playing in the key the song is in and learn the chord changes you're improvising. Thats how I learned it. I am no Charlie Parker but I get along. As to how long it takes? It depends on how much time and effort you want to put into it.

I would learn by ear. Scales are good and all, but you probably should work on developing your ear. I suggest visiting a piano with your sax. Play a chord, or a few notes with the pedal down. Then start playing your horn over it. Figure out what sounds you like, and those you don't. There are CD's that have chord progressions on them, and that can be very beneficial too. Also, listen to some great jazz artists (not only sax players) like Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Mann...
