Can't play guitar for my life?
-
So a few years my grade 8 class was offering a free guitar lesson class so my parents bought me a little acoustic guitar for that class. We never really learned anything that year mostly because the teacher was a first year playing guitar as well. Now grade 10 I wanted to learn the guitar so I started looking up some songs and can pretty much only play Wonderwall. I thought I wanted to completely pursue it so I bought myself an electric guitar. I learned a few little things on it but pretty much nothing. Last Christmas that passed I could tell my parents were really pushing me to learn it by giving me stuff like guitar straps, picks, books and a video game called Rocksmith. I started playing the game and thought it was alright but now I got to the point where I just rage quit the game because I can't play guitar for ****. Every time I play the guitar and try learning something new or whatever I just get really angry because I can't do anything on it. I think I've just given up on guitar. It is something I would love to learn but I just can't do it. Answers, suggestions please? D:

On top of what "a guy" said (he basically covered everything), if you plan on getting far in guitar now, do all of the boring stuff now. I made the mistake of skipping out on my scales and mastering the fretboard and it slowed my progress down. So, with what a guy said. Memorize the fretboard and most basic major and minor scales, plus some chord positions. It will help you out a ton later. But you really don't NEED to learn any solos, and i wouldn't recommend trying a song way above your skill level, as it will only hurt your confidence in your playing. But i would reccomend taking 2 months worth of lessons

Here's my process for getting better. Before you start learn to read tab (it's really easy). Songsterr.com actually plays tabs for you so give it a try. Now I recommend you start from step one considering it's been years since you took a formal class. 1) take a beginner class to learn proper technique NO MATTER how good you are. Nothing fancy just something so you know the proper way to fret, hold the pick, etc. it will save you a huge hassle. Guitar center offers these types of classes for less than $50. You need only one. You won't believe how bad technique can weigh you down. 2) Learn to play 3 songs ALL the way through using BOTH video lessons AND tabs. Some good choices would be anything by linkin park, the song wish you were here, something easy. 3) Learn to play a song in it's entirety WAY above your skill level, excluding any guitar solos in the song (stairway to heaven is good, so is sweet child of mine) 4) Learn to play 3 guitar solos. Mine were wish you were here, 18 and life, and sanitarium's first solo 5) build upon your song repertoire and then take one or two more guitar lessons It won't come fast, guitar is a life long time consuming discipline
