Does Anyone know about Arabic Singing?

• I'm fascinated about some of "Arabic" singing (I'm not interested in taking lessons. I just appreciate it & want to know more ABOUT it.). 1) Why do some Arabic songs have the lyric "Layali" in them? (It seems kinda common to hear - even in POP/WESTERN Songs like Sting's "Desert Rose".) 1a) What does it mean (Why is it common?) My next question is if someone could listen to the Vocalist on this song "The Longing 1" & tell me a little bit about his singing 2) What Style is he Singing (called)? 2a) Is He Chanting? 2b) Is He Rehearsing (my Bangaledeshi Co-Worker listened to it & said that He was "Rehearsing")? I'm open to any information.

  "Layli" in literal arabic translation means "my night". But that's not what they're singing about. "Lalyli" in this situation is from the Coptic word meaning "cheers". That's something most people don't know. I'm afraid I can't help you with other question, as my knowledge is somewhat limited. But I do know he is not "rehearsing" =D . He is saying "Ya layli" over and over. It's almost like freestyling because he's not saying anything in particular. Hope this helped.
