How to sing with your diaphragm?

How do I sing with my diaphragm (not my throat)?

  • How do I sing with my diaphragm (not my throat)? Alot of people tell me that I need to sing with my diaphragm, and not my throat. How do I do this? Also, How can I Expand my vocal chords?

  • Answer:

Two ways to practice this. 1) Lie on your back and sing. You have to use your diaphragm in this position. 2) sing directly in front of a lit candle. If you blow the candle out, you are not using your diaphragm. The only way to expand your vocal chords is to practice daily. This will strengthen the chords, and also slowly increase your vocal range (expand the chords). Think of it this way. A person who starts running does not go out and run a marathon the first day, week, or month. They have to start slowly, and work hard to build up strength, endurance, lung capacity, etc., to eventually be able to run long distance. It is the same with your vocal chords. They are muscles, just like your legs have. They need to be built up over time, to be stronger and more flexible. Good luck!

hello i was a member of my high school choir and every time we had problems with projecting our voice, our coach will make us bend over (stand up then reach your toes with your fingers) and for a while make us sing in that position and she'd tell us to remember and feel how the muscles would work. afterwards she would make us stand up straight and tell us to remember how we sang while we were bent over and we would feel the difference. at least i did. hope this helps.

im a singer. and i had trouble with that one myself. it gets easier the more you do it. take a deep breath and expand your lungs and stomach. when you first learn to do it when you sing you will lightly push on your stomach. and when you sing it should make it louder and you can sometimes tell the difference between you singing from you throat and singing from your diaphragm. after a while of doing this you will get used to it and right away start doing it. but you still might need to sometimes push lightly on your stomach. it helps to get you louder. and im not saying a real big push lol. lightly.

A simple change of standing up and holding your head higher when you sng makes so much difference to your singing voice. If you get singing lessons ask your teacher to help you.

First, lay on the floor and put your hand on your stomach and breathe. Notice your hand go up and down as you inhale/exhale. Now, you have to sing the same way as you breathe. If you scream, you are pushing with your stomach. Notice ?? S"o, when you want to sing loud, you push harder with the stomach muscle (diaphram). Now stand up and put your hand on your stomach and feel the stomach muscles tighten. This will come naturally after 1 week and you will save problems with your throat. If you are doing this right, you should be able to sing for hours, 7 days a week and not damage your throat nor feel any pain.

You can expand your vocal chords and sing with your diaphragm by doing breathing excersises. Breath, moving your stomach only- there are also some great websites that explain it alot better than I can. The link below is very good- it has multiple singing questions that have been answered.. Hope some of this helps!

Breathe very deep using your belly, not your chest. You want your stomach to expand outward like a pot-belly. Not your chest.
