When are you considered an advanced or professional flute player versus an intermediate?
-
I'll have been playing the flute for ten years this October. I'm seventeen years old, and have been playing the flute since I was nine years old. I'm first chair in my high schools concert band and marching band. When could I consider myself to be an advanced or professional player? Another question I have: All throughout high school, I've suffered from a case of lazy-teenager-syndrome. This means that even though I am quite capable of managing a 3.0 grade point average, I do not. Since my last report card, I have started to stop being lazy, I know its the last marking period of the year, but if I kick the habit now, I will be able to continue the good habit throughout my senior year. Because I have not had good grades, and my mother is not allowing me to take the SAT because (I've been lazy) she thinks it would be a waste of her money. I have been kicking three ideal majors for myself. One is being an elementary school teacher, a music teacher, or a professional flute player. I have not told my parents about the last one, but the last one, is something that I really want to do. I live in Philadelphia, if this helps with my next question. What college would be the best for me to go to in my area to become a professional flute player? I was thinking maybe the Performing Arts Institute, but I really don't know too much about that place. I'll look more into it I suppose. What sort of jobs could I get as a professional flute player, and are those kind of jobs extremely hard to come by? Thank you to all who answer my question. I really appriciate you taking the time to answer my question.

Answer:
Professional only means that you are paid for performing. Advanced is a relative term. Are you as good as the best high school flute players in your state? Comparison is everything. Glad to see you getting your attitude toward study improving. It always looks good to see that a student is improving. Someone who raises their grades gets good attention. Not sure what the SAT cost now, but go to the library and bookstores and see what you can find about studying for the SAT. You may also find help on line. Save your money so you can take the test before another year passes. As to which school contact all in your area. Don’t trust our answers of even those of present or former students. Contact the college (Almost all have websites) mail, email or phone them. Tell them you are interested in their school. Ask for entrance requirements. Ask for all brochures and information about your interest. Ask about tuition and other expenses. Ask about scholarships and their requirements. Do this with every school that you would consider. Do it again during the first part of you Junior year. Good Luck
